HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - COTA Meeting Minutes 10/03/2011M I N U T E S COMMISSION ON THE ARTS October 3, 2011 The Commission was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Chair Fred Lewis. Members present were Andrew Zehr, Craig Zywicki, and Christopher Sutch. Spring 2012 Special Project Grant Hearings The Chair reminded everyone that special grants are limited to $750. Indian Cultural Association – The performers are coming from India with a complete entourage. The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble will perform in the City Auditorium, and the grant will help with those costs. The workshop will occur on April 6 and the concert on April 7. The notice on the NEA grant will not come until January 2012. The most expensive ticket is $25 for non-member adults, and less for children, students, and member adults. Co’Motion Dance Theater – Susan Jackson represented the group. The desire is to bring in individuals to work with the professional dancers (like the after-school programs). The funds will allow for the hiring of individual professional dancers. Dates are not specific yet. No location has been finalized yet. There will be some rehearsals. Ames Community Arts Council – Nancy Brousard represented the group. The grant will help to update the brochure. It will still be an important part of ACAC’s outreach efforts. The brochure will be the same format, but different paper stock. The 1,500 brochures should last several years. The actual print amount will likely be more than 1,500. The brochure will likely be more generic whenever possible. Annual grant funds have not really been put into this. Octagon – Heather Johnson reviewed the event to celebrate 150 years of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Octagon is partnering with the Ames Historical Society. Funds will be spent on advertising (before the June 30 cut-off for the City). They are still trying to look at how to make the display more interactive. The Union Pacific Museum will loan some items. Public Forum Heather talked about the upcoming “Festival of Trees.” Co’Motion Dance will be performing at Brunnier Museum in December. “Clearly” will be performed. Approval of September 12, 2011 Minutes Moved by Zywicki and seconded by Zehr to approve the September 12, 2011 minutes. Motion carried unanimously. New Business The Commission reviewed the January – July calendar. The calendar was received by the Commission.
