Monday, June 3, 2013
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 5:01 pm by Chair Fred Lewis. Members present were
Jennifer Brockpahler, Malinda Cooper, Andrew Zehr, and Craig Zywicki.
Approval of Minutes
It was moved by Commissioner Cooper and seconded by Commissioner Zywicki to approve the
May 6, 2013 minutes. Motion carried unanimously.
New Business
Fall 2013 Special Project Grants
A. Octagon Center for the Arts (Portrait Studio) – The request was for $750. Mr. Zywicki
moved that grant be approved for $720. Ms. Brockpahler seconded. Motion carried
unanimously.
B. Octagon Center for the Arts (Feinberg Mask Collection) – The request was for $750.
Commissioner Zehr moved the grant be approved for $610. Commissioner Cooper
seconded. Motion carried unanimously.
C. Co’Motion Dance Theater – The request was for a grant for $750 to use paying for a
computer programmer and a choreographer to pull together sound and technology to open
up new dance possibilities. Mr. Zehr expressed a concern that Co’Motion Dance be
reminded that the money needs to be used during the fall project grant period. Chair Lewis
asked that City staff inform Co’Motion Dance management of this concern. Ms.
Brockpahler moved that a grant of $620 be approved for the project. Mr. Zehr seconded.
Motion carried unanimously.
Public Forum
After approval of the grants, Chair Lewis asked if Kristin Roach would like to speak. Kristin
reminded the commissioners about the Art Walk on June 7 and that there would be a line up of
demonstrations by various artists. She also stated that live music would be present and that the
Octagon store would be open. The Octagon would be hosting a display of Iowa watercolor
artists. Ms. Roach concluded by thanking the Commission for funding the Octagon’s various
projects.
Next Meeting
The next meeting will be Monday, August 5, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City
Hall.
In the meantime, Chair Lewis reminded COTA grant recipients that annual grant reports and
spring special project grant reports are due on July 15.
Chair Lewis declared the meeting adjourned at 5:16 p.m.
