Fall 2013 Special Project Grant Hearings
A. Co'Motion Dance Theater -- Valerie Williams presented to COTA regarding the mini-
grant requests for computer programmer to pull together sound and technology. Their
request will help hire a programmer that can communicate music with the composers.
She noted that she has identified individuals that can assist her in getting this product
developed. The March 8, 2014 concert will feature this production concept. Williams
noted this concept is cutting edge. Zywicki asked when the event is. Williams noted it
is March 8th, but the work must be done during the fall of 2013. Zywicki wondered how
it would go if the work was not completed during the granting period. Williams said the
best case scenario would be completion and preview completed in November 2013, but
not before. Zywicki asked what the overall expense would be for the complete event.
Ms. Williams noted the total program expense would be around $5,000.
B. Octagon Center for the Arts (Portrait Studio) -- Kristin Roach, Exhibits Manager for
Octagon Center for the Arts, made a request for a stipend for those coming in for the
Portrait Studio. She passed around a picture of the Portrait Studio that was done in
Grinnell, Iowa. She noted that she is seeking funding outside the COTA process for
school tours. She said that youth will have several interactive opportunities available
during the Art Festival in downtown Ames at that time. Zehr noted that the application
was very thorough. Zywicki asked if it was different than anything else they would do .
Roach noted that typically artists are not paid a stipend for exhibiting in the space and
generally it is not interactive with the drawing and painting, so it is different than what
they would typically do in this space. Brockpahler asked how the portraits will be
replicated so that the artists can take them home. Roach noted that they will scan the
works and print them to hang in the exhibit hall. Zehr asked if this was a trend for future
exhibits, to include more interactive exhibits. Roach noted not in 2014, but believes that
it could happen in 2015, as it is something they are looking to do.
C. Octagon Center for the Arts (Feinberg Mask Collection) -- Kristin Roach stated that in
1993 the Octagon received a donated gift of a Feinberg Mask Collection. Several
masks were willed to the Octagon and friends donated several more masks in April
2013. The Octagon is looking to do a 20th Anniversary Exhibit by adding more exhibit
space for the permanent collection. They are also looking at putting together a new
catalog on the collection as well, so this special project grant would fund the catalog.
Cooper asked how many catalogs staff anticipates printing. Roach noted around 400.
Cooper wanted to know how it would be available to the public. Roach noted that they
would be sold in the shop at cost, or very close. Zywicki wanted to know if the catalog
sales revenue was reflected in the budget. Roach stated it was not due to the long time
to recoup the cost. Zywicki requested that the budget be resubmitted. Roach noted the
portrait studio is the priority between the two requests if COTA choose not to fund both
requests from the Octagon.
