Discuss adoption of the 2011 National Electric Code (NEC)
Choices are to adopt what the State of Iowa has adopted and to retain the City of Ames “romex” amendment, or not.
Larry Cormicle asked for input from the guests from the electric industry.
Dave Fitz would like to see the City of Ames adopt the same code that the State is enforcing. Uniform code is important.
Larry Brandt questioned building types in relation to use of “romex”. Discussion was held regarding building types and fire ratings.
Brown referred to the January 23 memo he’d sent to the Board offering further clarification of the issues.
Discussion was held regarding multifamily dwellings, elevator hoistways, commercial buildings, fire ratings, drop ceilings, mixed use buildings, restrictions of other cities, construction
costs, classification of fraternities and sororities.
Cormicle summarized the options.
1- adopt the State Electrical Code
2- adopt the NEC with the same amendments as the State, but deleting the Ames “romex” amendment
3- adopt the NEC with the same amendments as the State, and retaining the Ames “romex’ amendment
Moved by Heemstra, seconded by Francis:
The Building Code Board recommends City Council adopt the following changes to Ames Municipal Code Section 5.100, & 5.205 [to adopt the NEC with the same amendments as the State, and
