TRANSPORTATION POLICY COMMITTEE ACTION FORM
BACKGROUND:
The Ames Area MPO (AAMPO) is allocated one member on the Statewide Urban Design and
Specifications (SUDAS) Board of Directors. The representative must be a registered
professional engineer in Iowa.
SUDAS is a nonprofit program funded by the Iowa DOT and Iowa's cities and counties to
develop and maintain uniform design standards and construction specifications for urban
public improvement projects, including streets, sidewalks, sanitary sewers, and storm
drainage. SUDAS is Iowa's only statewide system of common urban design standards, helping
reduce contractor confusion, encourage competitive bidding, and control construction costs for
cities and counties across the state.
Justin Clausen, the current City of Ames Public Works Director, has served as
AAMPO's representative to the SUDAS Board of Directors for the past two years,
continuing a role that the City's Public Works Director has held since SUDAS's
inception in 2004.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Appoint Justin Clausen as the 2027 AAMPO representative to the Statewide Urban
Design and Specifications (SUDAS) Board of Directors.
2. Appoint a different registered professional engineer to serve as the 2027 AAMPO
representative.
MPO DIRECTOR'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
The Ames Public Works Director has successfully served in this role since SUDAS's
inception in 2004. Therefore, it is the recommendation of the MPO Executive Director that the
Transportation Policy Committee adopt Alternative No. 1, as described above.
