HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Resolution approving suspension of parking regulations for closed areas from 6:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026RESOLUTION NO. 26-560 RESOLUTION APPROVING SUSPENSION OF PARKING REGULATION FOR ISU HOMECOMING EXCYTEMENT IN THE STREETS FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA WHEREAS, the Homecoming Central Committee at Iowa State University (ISU) is again planning to host its annual Homecoming activities from September 27 through October 3, 2026; and, WHEREAS, the events this year include a Homecoming Kickoff Event on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the ISU Alumni Center, the traditional ExCYtement in the Streets lawn displays on Friday, October 2, 2026, and Mass Campaniling on ISU Central Campus on Friday, October 2, 2026; and, WHEREAS, the Kickoff Event on September 27, 2026, will be held at the ISU Alumni Center in partnership with ISU Athletics, the Ames Farmers Market, and the ISU Homecoming 5K Race; and, WHEREAS, ExCYtement in the Streets consists of Greek Week lawn displays on Friday, October 2, 2026, and these will be exhibited between approximately 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.; and, WHEREAS, to facilitate this event, organizers have requested the closure of the following streets from 7:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.: Sunset Drive from Ash Avenue to intersection with Gray Avenue; Ash Avenue from north of Gable Lane to Knapp Street (Knapp Street will remain open, Gable Lane will be closed); Gray Avenue from Lincoln Way to Sunset Drive; Pearson Avenue between Greeley Stre et and Sunset Drive; and Lynn Avenue just south of the First Baptist Church parking lot entrance to Knapp Street (Knapp will remain open); and, WHEREAS, the Public Works Department staff will provide the barricades necessary for the street closures along with “No Parking” signs, and organizers will be responsible for staffing the barricades while they are in place; and, WHEREAS, organizers have indicated they will notify affected non-Greek residents by going door-to-door with information; and, WHEREAS, the Homecoming Central Committee has a long track record of successfully hosting lawn displays as part of ExCYtement in the Streets. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that the suspension of parking regulations on the aforementioned closed streets for ISU Homecoming’s ExCYtement in the Streets event from 7:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, is hereby approved.
