SUBJECT:REQUESTS FROM AMES BOOSTER CLUB FOR THE AMES HIGH
HOMECOMING TAILGATE ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2026
COUNCIL ACTION FORM
BACKGROUND:
Ames Booster Club is planning to host the Ames High Homecoming Tailgate, a new event
held in conjunction with the Ames High Homecoming Parade, on Monday, September 21, from
5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The goal of this event is to host food vendors to give families attending the
parade convenient food options. Ames High athletic teams will also gather for photos and
autographs.
Event set up will be begin at 5 p.m., including the street closure. The event will take place from
5:30 to 8 p.m. Tear down will be complete and the street closure will be open by 8:30 p.m. The
event is open to the public.
In order to facilitate the event, organizers have requested the following:
Blanket Temporary Obstruction Permit
Blanket Vending License
Closure of Burnett from 5th Street to 6th Street, including the closure of 14 metered
parking spaces, from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
Waiver of blanket Vending License Fee (Loss of $50 to the City Clerk's Office)
Waiver of lost parking meter fees (Loss of $7 to the Parking Fund)
The City Council's policy regarding the waiver of parking meter fees in areas that are less than
District-wide is to consider such requests on a case-by-case basis. Though the Homecoming
Tailgate is a new addition to Ames High Homecoming this year, requests relating to the
Homecoming Parade have been supported by the City Council in prior years.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Approve the requests for the Ames High Homecoming Tailgate, including the waivers of
fees.
2. Approve the requests for the Ames High Homecoming Tailgate, but require
reimbursement for the lost parking meter and Vending License fees.
3. Deny the requests.

CITY MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
The Ames High Homecoming Parade is a long-standing Ames tradition in the
Downtown. The Ames High Homecoming Tailgate will add to the festivities and grow
the event, drawing more families to the Downtown. Therefore, it is the recommendation of
the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative No. 1, as described above.
