Present: Lisa Shen, Diane and Dave Brotherson, Tom and Pat Sauer, Cindy Hicks, Bill Malone and Karlai
Thornburg
Lisa Shen called the meeting to order at 5:10 pm.
Minutes: There were no minutes available to approve because the secretary is on vacation. They will
be reviewed and approved at the next meeting.
Treasurer’s Report: Bill Malone provided an update based on Jenn Malone’s report. The balance has
not changed. See the attached report for details.
Motion was made to approve the treasurer’s report. All approved.
Kosovo Update:
Tom Sauer gave an update. Mayor Haia sent aletter to the acting mayor of Pudiheva. AIPCA will pursue
a Sister City arrangement. Tom and Pat Sauer will attend the Sister State visit planned for June. Money
has been budgeted for Tom’s visit.
There is some confusion over two meetings with the Sister State Office. The meeting is likely on
February 29, 1:30-3:30 at the Sister City office in Des Moines. There will likely be several mayors
present from Kosovo cities.
Student 2020 Japanese Delegation Update:
Cindy Hicks provided an update. The first meeting with students was held on February 9, the next
meeting will be March 1. A chaperone meeting is scheduled for February 22. Cindy has been
corresponding with Koshu officials on profile sheets. She is working with United Group on airline tickets
for the group. She will order t-shirts for the group. The city gift will be discussed at the next meeting.
There was a discussion on concern about the Corona virus. A couple of students and one adult
cancelled. Cindy will check on refundable tickets. Right now 18 students and 5 adults will be on the
delegation.
There will be a fall 2020 Japanese student delegation coming to Ames. Preparations will start in a few
months.
Future Membership Fee:
The board discussed just having one fee as $25 for a family. A motion was made by Diance to just have
this one family fee of $25 and it was seconded by tom. It was approved unanimously. This will be
effective January 1 of 2021.
Board Update:
Kim resigned from the board. AIPCA needs 2 more board members. Plus Tom and Diane go off the
board this year. Start recruiting. Ask Susan Gwiasda to to put something in CitySide.
Tunisia Sister City Request:
Lisa was contacted by the COA manager that they had been contacted by Lotfi Ben Othmane at ISU who
has connections there to start a Sister City arrangement. The board asked Lisa to contact Lotfi to give a
presentation at a future meeting so that they could learn more.
Annual Meeting:
Annual Meeting dates were discussed. It will likely be June 29 or 30 at the City Church. Diane will
contact City Church.
Public Arts Commission:
Lisa and the Assistant city Manager asked the Commission to accept a piece of art from Koshu City. They
have not heard back from the Commission.
Meeting was adjourned at 6:05 pm. No meeting in March. The next meeting will be in April.
