AMES INTERNATIONAL PARTNER CITIES ASSOCIATION
November 18, 2010
The meeting was called to order at 5:00 pm by President Diane Oppedal.
Members present: Diane Oppedal, Sharlene Sullivan, Judy Kemp, Oye Pitcher, Sandy Hoenig, Cappie Dobyns, George Beran, and Bill Diesslin.
Members absent: Carolyn Klaus, Kathleen Ary, Laura Lynn Boettger, John Kolb, David Miller, and Bob Kindred, Ames City Liaison.
Approval of the October 14, 2010, minutes were made. Carried.
Treasurer Bill Diesslin presented the monthly report. Due to an omission found in the report, Bill will make a new report to be presented at the next meeting.
Old business:
September 21-25, 2010 Koshu youth to Ames visit:
Ron Heinen is donating 35 copies of a CD to be presented to the youth delegates and sent to Koshu with the next Ames youth delegation.
Cappie will forward her photos to Sharlene, whose daughter will make a photo CD. These will be available to Ames student hosts in exchange for a blank CD.
Judy will do a follow-up evaluation with the host families.
Judy and Bill will follow up on unpaid host membership dues.
Sharlene has the extra gift copies of the Board’s book Sweet Corn and Sushi. 71 were ordered @ $10 each; 28 were given as youth gifts. (The board also purchased 30 pottery cups,
ordered by Carolyn @$10 each, for adult gifts.)
New Business:
During the October 27 adult trip to Koshu, Mayor Ann Campbell relayed the Board’s suggested 2011 exchange dates of late June for Ames youth to Koshu and for an adult delegation from
Koshu to visit Ames in May or late September. Diane will contact Koshu for further information regarding those dates. The teachers will organize and publicize an informational meeting
for Ames grade 7-9 students, and their parents, who may be interested in an AIPCA youth exchange to Japan.
A beautiful framed piece of original art was presented to the Board along with a photo book of the artist’s work, as a token of appreciation for the care given the Koshu student
who was hospitalized while here in September. Diane will take it to City Hall for display and send a thank you to Mayor Tanabe. A similar piece presented by the Koshu Mayor’s office
to Mayor Campbell was given by her to Mary Greeley Hospital.
Names were suggested for an unexpired term of a middle school representative for the Board.
Committee Reports:
Carolyn sent out an evaluation form to the adults who visited Koshu. Evaluations have been positive with the exception of the airline ticket arrangements with Travel and Transport.
Bill and Carolyn will assemble a photo/folder of the trip for the AIPCA Archive Records. Diane will contact the Ames Tribune suggesting an interview article for the paper.
Other business:
Board members discussed ideas to generate more publicity for the organization. We will try to do more promotion with pictures and articles in the Ames Tribune. A wine and cheese
type of social was also mentioned. Also discussed was possible ways to be supportive of our two Assistant English Language teachers in Japan.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:25 pm.
