AMES INTERNATIONAL PARTNER CITIES ASSOCIATION
October 21, 2010
The meeting was called to order at 5:05 pm by President Diane Oppedal.
Members present: Diane Oppedal, Carolyn Klaus, Sandy Hoenig, John Kolb, Cappie Dobyns, Kathleen Ary, Laura Lynn Boettger, George Beran, and Bill Diesslin.
Members absent: Sharlene Sullivan, Judy Kemp, Oye Pitcher, David Miller, and Bob Kindred, Ames City Liaison.
Approval of the September 16, 2010, minutes were made by Carolyn Klaus and seconded by Kathleen Ary. Carried.
Treasurer Bill Diesslin, presented the monthly report. The balance is $7726.10. Approved. Carolyn moved we donate $150 to Oakwood Church for the recent Japanese dinner. Motion was
amended by Bill to make a donation of $100-$150 but not to exceed $150.00. Carried. Payment of Iowa City expenses was tabled until a later date, after all Koshu trip bills have been
submitted.
New Business:
Newsletter: Cappie distributed draft copies of the upcoming newsletter. Erin Thompson (City of Ames) will email the newsletter out to all members after receipt of an updated email
list from Bill.
President Diane Oppedal will visit with Mayor Ann Campbell regarding possible dates for our Ames youth to visit Koshu (the 3rd or 2nd week in June, 2011) and for an adult delegation
from Koshu to visit Ames (in May or late September, 2011).
Committee Reports:
The members discussed the recent trip by the Japanese students, reimbursements for various charges and evaluation. Bill expressed a need to involve the ISU Japanese Club student interpreters
much earlier in the planning process. Cappie wondered if students could be involved in the planning process. The advisability of travel insurance for our students going to Japan was
another item that came up. Further discussion tabled until the November meeting.
Carolyn and Bill gave an update on the partner city exchange to Japan Oct. 27 - Nov. 3, 2010. Bill and Mayor Ann Campbell will be representing us in the 18 member delegation. Rhoda
Tzekua sent all delegates a detailed email: “What you need to know before traveling to Koshu.”
Board member attendance was discussed. Our by-laws state that if members miss 3 consecutive unexcused meetings or a total of 6 meetings in a year, they are to be replaced.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:10 pm.
