HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - May 4, 2026, Commission on the Arts Meeting MinutesMINUTES COMMISSION ON THE ARTS Council Chambers City Hall, 515 Clark Avenue Monday, May 4, 2026 Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Nicolas Bulver. Members present were Ferit Karakaya, Mary Kay Truckenmiller, Donald Tweedt, and Candace Zwank. Public Forum No one spoke during Public Forum. Approval of April 6, 2026, Minutes It was moved by Mary Kay, seconded by Donald, to approve the minutes of April 6, 2026. Motion carried unanimously. Fall 2026 Special Project Grant Hearings Jordan Miyoshi, with ACTORS spoke about their upcoming Evil Dead the Musical. He explained how COTA funds would help cover the higher cost of props and costuming needed for this show. He took a few questions from the Commissioners around show dates/times, audience, and additional details around technical costs. Next, the Commission heard from Ari Dubin with Rolling Hills Chamber Music, a new Ames area non-profit. She explained a bit about Rolling Hills Chamber Music and shared details on their upcoming Classical Music Festival. She took questions around how the event will be laid out within parks, donations during the event, weather backup plans, and artist ensemble size. Amy Divine spoke on behalf of Story Theater Company, giving details on their Fall Play: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. She explained the additional costs that go into putting on the play and how COTA can help. She also answered a few questions on show times, expected attendance, venue, and performer composition. Finally, the Commission heard from David Detlefs with Vagrant Fear Productions, who is working in conjunction with KHOI Community Radio, to put on Narly's Night of Music. He gave some background on Vagrant Fear Productions as well as information about Narly’s Night of Music. He took questions from the commissioners about the type of music the bands play, planned venue, event logistics, and ticket prices. Upcoming Important Dates Upcoming important dates were reviewed by Nicolas, which included the next meeting on June 1, 2026. Adjourn There being no further business, Nicolas adjourned the meeting at 5:30 p.m.
