SUBJECT:CLOSURE OF ADDITIONAL PARKING SPACES FOR AMES HISTORY
MUSEUM BIG BASH
COUNCIL ACTION FORM
BACKGROUND:
On May 26, 2026, the City Council approved requests from Ames History Museum regarding
the Big Bash event taking place July 3. The event includes a vintage car show, special exhibits
in Ames History Museum, sponsor booths with giveaways, food trucks, and kids' activities
including inflatables and a trackless train. The original request included the closure of 44
metered parking spaces for the event.
Ames History Museum has received a great deal of interest in the vintage car show, and is
requesting to expand the event. The expanded area would be along 5th Street from Kellogg
Avenue to the Library book drop exit. The expansion will require the closure of an additional
10 metered parking spaces, and traffic from the Library book drop will need to be re-routed
through Kellogg Lot S. The estimated loss of revenue from the closure of the metered spaces
totals $20.
At the time of the original approval on May 26, staff recommended, and City Council approved,
the requirement for the organizers to reimburse the City for lost parking meter revenue.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Approve the request to close 5th Street between Kellogg and the Library exit and an
additional 10 metered parking spaces for Ames History Museum's Big Bash on July 3,
subject to reimbursement for the lost parking meter revenue.
2. Approve the requests, but do not require reimbursement for the lost parking meter
revenue.
3. Decline the request.
CITY MANAGER'S RECOMMENDED ACTION:
The City Council previously approved requests related to this event. Additional space is now
needed to facilitate it, which requires closure of 10 additional parking meters. The original
approvals granted by the City Council required reimbursement for lost parking meter revenue.
Therefore, it is the recommendation of the City Manager that the City Council adopt Alternative
No. 1, as described above.
