COMMISSION ON THE ARTS
Council Chambers, City Hall
Monday, March 2, 2026
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Christa Knoll-Drobny. Members present
were Nicholas Bulver, Steve Kawaler, and Ferit Karakaya. Mary Kay Truckenmiller was
absent.
Public Forum
Jennifer Brockpahler shared about Ames Community Art Council’s Business of Art
Conference the upcoming weekend, inviting any who are interested to attend.
Approval of February 2, 2026, Minutes
It was moved by Steve, seconded by Nicholas, to approve the minutes of February 2,
2026. Motion carried unanimously.
Summer 2026 Special Project Grant Recommendations
Christa explained that Steve had discovered an error on the KHOI FM applications
whereby the requested amounts for the two projects were switched on the cover sheets.
Jeramy Neefus presented several options to account for the error.
It was moved by Christa, seconded by Nicholas, to approve the following
recommendations:
Ames Community Arts Council (Empty Bowls 2026) – $760
Friends of Ames Strings (Youth Ed. & Performance Opportunities) – $1,950
ACTORS (“Come From Away” Set Expenses) – $1,060
KHOI FM (Documentary Film Series) – $700
KHOI FM (“Map of My Kingdom” Production) – $875
Ames Town & Gown (Twelfth Night Early Music Ensemble Outreach) – $570
Octagon Center for the Arts (Ames Documentary Film Festival) – $648
Motion carried unanimously.
Upcoming Important Dates
Upcoming important dates were reviewed by Christa. Christa and Steve noted that
tonight would be their last COTA meeting. The Commissioners thanked Christa and
Steve for their service.

There being no further business, Christa adjourned the meeting at 5:08 p.m.
