RESOLUTION APPROVING SUSPENSION OF PARKING REGULATIONS AND
ENFORCEMENT FOR SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS, Ames Main Street (AMS) has submitted requests for Small Business
Saturday on November 28, 2026. To facilitate the event, organizers are requesting a
blanket Temporary Obstruction Permit and suspension of parking regulations and
enforcement for the Downtown and Campustown Areas from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on
Saturday November 28, 2026 ($2,468.25 estimated loss to the Parking Fund); and,
WHEREAS, in order to provide continued support to small businesses during the
holiday season, AMS has requested extending the blanket Temporary Obstruction Permit
and suspension of parking regulations and enforcement in Downtown and Campustown
to include December 5, December 12, December 19, and December 26, 2026 (additional
$9,873.00 estimated loss to the Parking Fund); and,
WHEREAS, City staff is preparing the FY 2026/27 budget and anticipates including
$16,000 in the Hotel/Motel Tax Fund to support parking waivers. However, the budget will
not be finalized and adopted formally by the City Council for several more months.
Therefore, the approval of the transfer of funding is conditional upon the Council adop ting
a budget with sufficient funding to complete the transfer . It should be noted that the City
Council has approved the waiver and reimbursement of lost meter revenue for this event
in previous years; and,
WHEREAS, Small Business Saturday is an annual event for the Downtown. This
event aims to attract people to the Downtown and promotes shopping locally to kick off
the holiday shopping season.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames,
Iowa, that suspension of parking regulations and enforcement for Small Business
Saturday on November 28, 2026, is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 13th day of January, 2026.
