The Ames City Council met jointly with the Mary Greeley Medical Center Board of Trustees at 5:00
p.m. on December 12, 1989, in the Council Chambers of the City Administration Building, 621
Main Street, pursuant to law with Mayor Pro Tem Curtis presiding and the following Council
Members present: Brown, Campbell, Hoffman, Parks, & Thurston. Mayor Goodland was absent.
The following Hospital Board Members were present: Clem, Dasher, Flynn, Halliburton, and
Patterson.
Hospital Board Member Clem stated that at the next Hospital Board meeting she will make a motion
and vote for the Hospital Board to begin videotaping its meetings.
Ray Anderson, City Planner, and Jeffrey Stevenson, Hospital President, presented an overview of
the hospital/medical zone site utilization as well as characteristics of the surrounding areas.
Physical plant needs and parking needs of the hospital were discussed. Mr. Stevenson mentioned
possible locations for a future parking ramp. He stated that a meeting will be held with McFarland
Clinic to discuss strategic planning. Council Member Campbell brought up the question of what
businesses need to be in, and in fact should be encouraged to be in the hospital/medical zone and
which ones should be discouraged from locating there. She suggested that the Planning and Zoning
Commission discuss this issue. Mayor Pro Tem Curtis pointed out that it would be very difficult
to ever change the boundaries of the hospital/medical zone. When asked, Mr. Stevenson said that
it would be at least a year before they would be in a position to begin the construction of any
additional parking area. Tom Knox, Hospital Consultant, briefly reviewed Mary Greeley Medical
Center's strategic plan draft report and said that more information would be available in the near
future after further discussion with the Hospital Board.
