OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AMES, IOWA SEPTEMBER 18, 1990
The Ames City Council met in special session at 7:00 p.m. on September 18, 1990, in joint session
with the Planning and Zoning Commission in Conference Room No. 235 in the City Hall, 515 Clark
Avenue, pursuant to law with Mayor Curtis presiding and the following members present: Brown,
Campbell, Hertz, Hoffman, Parks, and Wirth. Members of the Planning and Zoning Commission
who were present were: Allen, Clarke, McJimsey, Moehlmann, Pike, and Swanson. Planning and
Zoning Commission Member Espeland was absent.
WORKSHOP ON PROPOSED TRANSITION COMMERCIAL ZONING DISTRICT: Brian
O'Connell, Director of Planning and Housing, presented background on the development of the
proposed Transition Commercial Zoning District. Sandra McJimsey, Chair of the Planning and
Zoning Commission, read a statement summarizing the stance of the Commission on the
proposed district. Ray Anderson, City Planner, provided details on the sections and objectives
of the proposed ordinance. He also discussed with the Council and Commission Members a
proposed method for determining minimum open space requirements in a T-C zone as well as
ways of making this ordinance easily comprehended by developers.
It was proposed by the City Council that developers and the general public be given an
opportunity to comment on the proposed ordinance developing a Transition Commercial Zoning
District at a public meeting and that a second workshop on this topic be held after that.
WORKSHOP ON PROPOSED BUILDING HEIGHTS ALLOWED IN ZONING
DISTRICTS: Staff discussed proposed maximum building heights in various zoning districts with
Council and Commission Members. It was determined that this topic should also be addressed
at a public meeting.
COMMENTS: There were no comments.
ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 p.m.
