OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AMES, IOWA JANUARY 5 & 6, 1990
The Ames City Council met in special session to formulate goals for the next two years from 6:15 p.m. to 9:45
p.m. on January 5, 1990, and from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on January 6, 1990, at the Park Inn, 1206 South Duff,
pursuant to law with Mayor Larry R. Curtis presiding and the following members present: Brown, Campbell,
Hertz, Hoffman, Parks, & Wirth.
The Council discussed plans for the grand opening of the City Hall and Community Center. The City Attorney
and City Clerk provided an overview of the operations of their offices as well as their goals for the next two years.
Tim Shields, facilitator of the goal-setting session from Iowa City, led the Council through a discussion of their
expectations of the session and their perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of the City of Ames and the City
organization. After discussing the issues, challenges, and opportunities that lie ahead for the City of Ames, the
Council developed the following list of goals to be achieved or worked toward over the next two years.
Overall Goal:
1. Help to develop and participate in implementation of Ames Plan including revitalization of downtown and
Campustown.
Top Priority Goals:
2. Develop solid waste plan.
3. Develop and implement RFP's for Depot and Public Safety buildings.
4. Revise H-M zoning ordinance concerning uses and boundaries.
5. Develop marketing strategy for Ames.
High Priority Goals:
6. Develop peak load management plan for electric utility plant.
7. Identify and implement methods to increase regional cooperation.
Undifferentiated Goals:
8. Implement annexation plan.
9. Develop overall historic preservation plan.
10. Maintain city services in equilibrium with economic growth.
11. Implement housing study considering affordability and accessibility.
12. Establish youth activity programming as city function.
13. Study feasibility of Convention Center.
14. Identify and implement methods to increase citizen involvement.
The goal setting session was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
