OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AMES, IOWA OCTOBER 2, 1992
The Ames City Council met in special session at 8:30 a.m., October 2, 1992, in the Council
Chambers of the City Hall/Community Center, pursuant to law, with Mayor Pro Tem Parks presiding
and the following members present: Hertz, Hoffman, and Wirth. City Manager, Steve Schainker;
City Attorney, John Klaus and Public Works Director, Paul Wiegand were also present.
EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT PROCLAMATION: Mayor Pro Tem Parks stated that he did
not feel it would be appropriate for the City to support any special interest group and that this
might encourage other groups to ask for the City's support.
Council Members Hoffman and Wirth stated that this was simply a proclamation from the City
and that the City would not be endorsing this any more than they have endorsed other
proclamations in the past.
Motion by Wirth, seconded by Hoffman, to execute a proclamation on behalf of the Equal Rights
Amendment.
Roll Call Vote: 3-1. Voting Aye: Hertz, Wirth and Hoffman. Voting Nay: Parks. (Motion
declared adopted.)
ALPHA XI SORORITY: Motion by Wirth, seconded by Hoffman, to approve a request from
Alpha Xi Sorority to allow underage people on the premises while alcohol is being served during
a social event at the Coliseum on October 9, 1992.
Roll Call Vote: 4-0. (Motion declared carried unanimously.)
AMES COMMUNITY INDUSTRIAL PARK SUBDIVISION: Public Works Director, Paul
Wiegand, stated that approval of the final plat should be done first in order to process the final
land dividing activities. He stated that all work had been completed except for soil boring tests.
Motion by Hoffman, seconded by Wirth, to adopt RESOLUTION NO. 92-356 approving the
final plat for the Ames Community Industrial Park Subdivision with a note stating "subject to
completion of soil boring tests" noted on the plat prior to the issuance of a building permit.
Roll Call Vote: 4-0. Resolution declared adopted unanimously, signed by the Mayor, and
hereby made a portion of these minutes.
Public Works Director, Paul Wiegand, stated that since the final plat had been approved and the
lot could now be sold, the special assessment cost on the platted lots should be divided
appropriately throughout the development.
Motion by Hoffman, seconded by Hertz, to adopt RESOLUTION NO. 92-357 approving the
reapportionment of special assessments on platted lots for the Ames Community Industrial Park
Subdivision.
Roll Call Vote: 4-0. Resolution declared adopted unanimously, signed by the Mayor, and
hereby made a portion of these minutes.
Public Works Director, Paul Wiegand stated that the normal agreement for the maintenance of
a storm water storage area would be that the property owners would be responsible for mowing,
weeding, etc. and that the City would once a year clean debris, mow and weed the area.
Motion by Wirth, seconded by Hoffman, to adopt RESOLUTION NO. 92-358 approving the
covenant for the maintenance of the storm water storage area for the Ames Community Industrial
Park Subdivision.
Roll Call Vote: 4-0. Resolution declared adopted unanimously, signed by the Mayor, and
hereby made a portion of these minutes.
COMMENTS: There was a discussion by Council regarding the disposal of the Public Safety
Building. At this time, Council decided that it was premature to discuss any proposals on the
disposal of the property and that the property should be studied further.
Council Member Hoffman stated that she received a complaint about spraying and requested a
copy of the City's policy regarding spraying.
Dick Johnson, Developer of the Ames Community Industrial Park Subdivision, thanked the
Council and Staff for their cooperation and help with the creation of the Ames Community
Industrial Park Subdivision and voiced appreciation regarding their willingness to expedite the
approval of the final plat.
