OF THE SPECIAL MEETING
OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
CITY OF AMES, IOWA
OCTOBER 7, 1996
The Ames City Council met in Special Session at 5:00 p.m. on the 7th day of October, 1996 in
the City Council Chambers in the City Hall, 515 Clark Avenue, pursuant to law with Mayor Pro
Tem John Parks presiding and the following Council Members present: Campbell, Hoffman,
Parks, and Tedesco. Couns. Quirmbach and Wirth arrived late. Mayor Curtis was absent.
CALL TO ORDER: 5:02 p.m.
"PUBLIC FORUM MEETING" WITH GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE,
LOCAL ISSUES COUNCIL, AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE AMES CHAMBER OF
COMMERCE: The City Council and members of the Ames Chamber of Commerce discussed
issues of interest to the Chamber members, including how to encourage clean-up and
maintenance of properties in the business corridors of the community; the availability and
quality of existing Commercial property in the community and where it is located; whether
involuntary annexation should be considered as an option to providing additional Commercial
acres in the City; the density, lot-sizes, and intensification of the Downtown area in the existing
and proposed Land Use Policy Plan and the proposed Suburban Residential option to the
proposed Village concept; affordable housing issues; priority projects for the Downtown Plan;
the status of the U.S. 69 Corridor Study; issues relating to Commercial property taxes; and ways
of fostering communication between the Chamber and the City Council.
Chamber Member Jon Lowman served as Moderator for the meeting. Coun. Hoffman left the
meeting at 5:46 p.m., and Coun. Wirth left at 6:18 p.m.
No action was taken at this meeting.
ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
