MINUTES
OF THE SPECIAL MEETING
OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
CITY OF AMES, IOWA
SEPTEMBER 10, 1997
The Ames City Council met in Special Session on the 10th day of September, 1997, at 5:00 p.m.
in the City Council Chambers in City Hall, 515 Clark Avenue, pursuant to law with Mayor Larry R.
Curtis presiding, and the following Council members present: Campbell, Hoffman, Parks,
Quirmbach, Tedesco, and Wirth.
CALL TO ORDER: 5:00 p.m.
POLICY DIRECTION ON PROPOSED ZONING AND SUBDIVISION REGULATIONS:
City Manager Steve Schainker said the Staff had received and reviewed a “draft of the draft” zoning
and subdivision regulations associated with the 1996 Land Use Policy Plan, and felt it was important
to get direction from Council at this time, rather than after the consultants had prepared the draft that
would go out into the community for input. He said having this interim meeting with the Council
would ensure that they are going the way the Council wants to go in terms of certain policy issues
that have arisen in the course of preparing the ordinance.
The Council reviewed and discussed the policy issues contained in the Staff Report dated September
8, 1997, including Assignment of Authority in the Administration of the Regulations, Downtown
Service Center Design Standards, Permitted Use Classification, Adaptive Re-Use Provisions,
Nonconforming Use/Structure Provisions, Landscape and Screening Standards, Proposed Overlay
Zoning Districts, Notice Procedures, Approval Procedures, Availability of Building Permits,
Adequate Public Facilities Requirement, Major and Minor Subdivision Requirement, Erosion and
Sedimentation Control Requirements, and Alternative Street Design Standards.
Mayor Curtis left the meeting at 5:40 p.m., and Coun. Parks assumed the role of Mayor Pro Tem.
Coun. Wirth left the meeting at 6:50 p.m., and Coun. Hoffman left the meeting at 6:55 p.m.
The Council took no formal action at this meeting.
COMMENTS AND FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS: There were no comments.
ADJOURNMENT: The Special Meeting adjourned at 6:57 p.m.
