HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Special Meeting of the Ames City Council 11/09/1998MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL AMES, IOWA NOVEMBER 9, 1998 The Ames City Council met in joint session with the Hospital Board of Trustees at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room at Mary Greeley Medical Center (MGMC), 1111 Duff Avenue. Those in attendance from the City of Ames were City Manager Steve Schainker, Mayor Ted Tedesco, and Council Members Ann Campbell, Russ Cross, Judie Hoffman, John Parks, Herman Quirmbach, and Sharon Wirth. Representing MGMC were Kim Russel, Chief Executive Officer; Linda Muston, Vice-President; Jerry Sloan, Vice-President; Ann Madden Rice, Chief Financial Officer; and Board Members Pat Brown, Sarah Buck, Judy Clem, Karl Friederich, and Emil Peterson. OVERVIEW OF MGMC SERVICES. Chief Executive Officer Russel gave an overview of the Medical Center’s expansion and new services. Ms. Russel discussed two upcoming events involving the City Council: a “sneak preview” of the Israel Family Hospice House and small group meetings regarding MGMC finances. Ann Madden Rice explained the Medical Center’s financial assistance program. For the current year, they have budgeted $1,000,000 for this program. The recipients of this assistance are not just citizens of Ames, but members of the Medical Center’s entire service community. Linda Muston explained the Free Medical Clinic which has been operational in Ames since June 18, 1998. Jerry Sloan advised that the Medical Center’s guest house located at 1018 Kellogg opened in September. Ms. Russel gave an update on physician recruitment occurring in 1998. Dr. John Geanon, an ophthalmologist who recently joined the Medical Center staff, gave a slide presentation explaining glaucoma services now being offered. A video detailing surgical procedures to correct glaucoma was also shown. Chief Executive Officer Russel offered a tour to those wishing to view the new areas of the Medical Center.
