OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AMES, IOWA JUNE 25, 1998
The Ames City Council met in special session at 5:30 p.m. on the 25th day of June, 1998, in the City
Council Chambers in City Hall, 515 Clark Avenue, pursuant to law with Mayor Ted Tedesco
presiding and the following Council members present: Campbell, Cross, Hoffman, Parks,
Quirmbach, and Wirth.
Mayor Tedesco thanked the Staff and Council members for all of their hard work and time spent on
the zoning project.
PUBLIC HEARING ON RAIL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GRANT APPLICATION:
Moved by Campbell, seconded by Parks, to adopt RESOLUTION NO. 98-323 approving Rail
Grant application for Ball Plastic Container Corporation.
Roll Call Vote: 5-0-1. Voting Aye: Campbell, Hoffman, Parks, Quirmbach, Wirth. Voting Nay:
None. Abstaining: Cross. Resolution declared adopted, signed by the Mayor, hereby made a
portion of these minutes.
ZONING WORKSHOP:
Article 1 - Vested Rights
Section 1.6 (1&2) Moved by Parks, seconded by Campbell, to approve the proposed
paragraphs to be inserted into Article 1.
Vote on Motion: 6-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
“Sunset” Provision
Section 12.3.H (1&2) Moved by Parks, seconded by Cross, to accept the proposed Staff changes
to Article 12.3.H.
Vote on Motion: 6-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
Article 2 - Definition of Family
Section 2 Moved by Parks, seconded by Hoffman, to accept the definition of “family”
as proposed by Staff with the addition of the phrase, “According to Item 1"
at the end of Item 3.
Vote on Motion: 6-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
Article 3 - Non-Conforming Provisions
Section 8.B.1.a.2 Moved by Wirth, seconded by Campbell, to accept the adoption of the
provisions as written.
Vote on Motion: 4-2. Voting Aye: Campbell, Hoffman, Quirmbach, Wirth.
Voting Nay: Parks, Cross. Motion declared carried.
Article 12 - Rezoning Criteria - Suburban Residential
Section 4 Moved by Parks, seconded by Cross, to approve the criteria proposed by
Staff to be inserted in Section 12.4 of the proposed Suburban Residential
District regulations with the omission of the wording “that was recorded in
the records of the County Recorder prior to the effective date of this
ordinance” in Item A.
Vote on Motion: 4-2. Voting Aye: Campbell, Cross, Hoffman, Parks. Voting
Nay: Wirth, Quirmbach. Motion declared carried.
Staff will have the document prepared for public review by July 7.
Public Forum meeting will be held July 30 at 6:30 p.m.
COMMENTS: Hoffman asked if the housing study is available in the library for study.
Wirth encouraged everyone to think about having a more intense training program for those on
the Zoning Board for the new Zoning Code.
Quirmbach asked if the draft will be available for review on the Internet.
ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
