OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AMES, IOWA MAY 28, 1998
The Ames City Council met in special session at 5:30 p.m. on the 28th day of May, 1998, in the City
Council Chambers in City Hall, 515 Clark Avenue, pursuant to law with Mayor Ted Tedesco presiding
and the following Council members present: Campbell, Cross, Parks, Quirmbach, and Wirth. Council
Member Hoffman was absent.
The following deferred items on the “Red Flag” list from the previous zoning meeting were discussed.
Article 4 - Examples of Parking Lots in Comparison to Proposed Perimeter and Interior Landscape
Standards:
P.4-7, Table 4.4 (D) Moved by Campbell, seconded by Wirth, to reverse the parking area setbacks and
perimeter landscaping requirements in both columns on Table 4.4(D) for
Residentially-Zoned Lots and for Commercially or Industrially-Zoned Lots.
VOM: 5-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
P. 4-7, Line 240 Moved Campbell, seconded by Cross, to change 200 square feet to 500 square feet
on line 240.
VOM: 5-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
Article 3 - Nonconformities:
P. 3-8, Lines 9-13 Moved by Parks, seconded by Cross, to change the wording to say, “a building
containing a non-conforming use can be enlarged to meet the physical
requirements of the new zone.”
VOM: 2-3. Motion failed. Voting Aye: Parks, Cross. Voting Nay: Campbell,
Wirth, Quirmbach.
Definition - Pre-existing Condition:
Moved by Parks, seconded by Cross, to leave PUD and PC in the zoning code for
those properties that have an existing plan.
Moved by Parks, seconded by Quirmbach, to table the motion until the next special
zoning meeting.
VOM: 5-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
The meeting recessed at 7:41 p.m.
The meeting reconvened at 7:47 p.m.
Article 4 - Parking Standards for Fast Food Restaurants:
P. 4-12, Table 4.7(B) Moved by Campbell, seconded by Quirmbach, to accept changes by Staff to state:
“12 spaces per 1,000 square feet in the dining room and waiting area. If seating is
not provided, 1 space per 2 employees” for a fast food restaurant.
VOM: 5-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 8:28 p.m.
