OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AMES, IOWA MARCH 31, 1998
The Ames City Council met in special session at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st day of March, 1998, in the
City Council Chambers in City Hall, 515 Clark Avenue, pursuant to law with Mayor Ted Tedesco
presiding and the following Council members present: Campbell, Cross, Hoffman, Parks,
Quirmbach, and Wirth.
CALL TO ORDER: 7:00 p.m.
AMENDMENT TO BUILDING CODE ORDINANCE: Moved by Hoffman, seconded by Cross,
to pass on first reading an ordinance correcting technical amendments to the Building Code.
Roll Call Vote: 6-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
Moved by Parks, seconded by Quirmbach, to suspend the rules necessary for the passage of an
ordinance.
Roll Call Vote: 6-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
Moved by Parks, seconded by Quirmbach, to pass on second and third readings and adopt
ORDINANCE NO. 3479 correcting technical amendments to the Building Code.
Roll Call Vote: 6-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
DISCUSSION OF PROPOSED ZONING ORDINANCE: City Manager Steve Schainker stated
that City Staff had reviewed the elements of the proposed Zoning Ordinance with members of
the community, and that they had prepared responses from comments received by those who
have evaluated the documents.
Discussion was held regarding the following articles of the Zoning Ordinance: Article 1 - Title;
Authorization, Purpose and Miscellaneous Provision; Article 2 - Rules of Construction and
Definitions; Article 3 - Zoning Process; and, Article 4 - Development Standards.
DISCUSSION OF PROPOSED SUBDIVISION ORDINANCE: It was determined that this item
would be discussed at a later special Council meeting.
COMMENTS: The next Zoning Ordinance workshop will be held on April 7, 1998, at 5:30 p.m.
Moved by Hoffman, seconded by Campbell, to place on the April 14 agenda a request from the
ISU Research Park to amend the P-I Plan for the Park.
City Manager Schainker said that Staff was investigating this request.
Council Member Hoffman withdrew the motion.
Council Member Cross requested that the letter from Gary Smiley regarding over-occupancy of
rental property at 4123 Aplin Road be referred to the City Manager.
Mayor Tedesco explained that the Housing Board of Appeals has not met for several years, and
that it would be appropriate to assign the duties of this board to the Building Code Board of
Appeals.
Moved by Campbell, seconded by Wirth, to place on the April 14 agenda the first passage
of an ordinance repealing the code section which created the Housing Board of Appeals,
and to assign those duties of the Housing Board of Appeals to the Building Code Board
of Appeals.
Vote on Motion: 6-0. Motion declared carried unanimously.
ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 10:00 p.m.
