OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AMES, IOWA NOVEMBER 18, 2002
The Ames City Council met in special session with area legislators at 11:45 a.m. on the 18 day ofth
November, 2002, in Ames City Hall Conference Room 235, 515 Clark Avenue, pursuant to law with
Ames Mayor Ted Tedesco presiding and the follow ing Council mem bers present: G oodhue, H offm an,

represen ting the Story Cou nty B oard of S up ervisors; Iow a Senator (D istrict 5) S tew art Iverson, Jr.;

Kurtenb ach, Iow a Representative-E lect (D istrict 46 ) Lisa H edd ens, and Susan Judkins, representative
from the Iowa League of Cities. City of Ames staff present were Steve Schainker, Bob Kindred,
Sheila Lundt, and Tom Neumann.
The Mayor reviewed the Iowa League 2003 Legislative Priorities and issues specific to the City of
Ames.
The Mayor then opened the floor for discussion, questions, or comments. There was general
discussion about the formula for estimating Local Option Tax payments, tax structure in the state
(income, sales, and property), and tax studies. Costs of the MFPRS (Municipal Fire and Police
Retirement System) were reviewed. There was also a general discussion of joint governmental
planning efforts.
The legislative leaders are in the process of making committee assignments. ISAC and the League
will help with orientation in some way.
There was also a very lengthy discussion of the residential property tax rollback and the impact on
small and primarily residential communities. The sales tax issue will be studied in the session.
