OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AND HOSPITAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES
AMES, IOWA JUNE 12, 2003
The Ames City Council and the Hospital Board of Trustees met in joint session at 11:30 a.m. on the
12th day of June, 2003, in the Mary Greeley Medical Center (MGMC) South Auditorium. Those in
attendance from the City Council were Mayor Ted Tedesco and Council Members Russ Cross, Judie
Hoffman, Riad Mahayni, Daryle Vegge, and Sharon Wirth. Board of Trustees Members Patricia
Brown, Sarah Buck, Karl Friederich, Mary Kitchell, and Emil Peterson were present.
Sarah Buck welcomed the members of the City Council, the Hospital Board of Trustees, and
administrative staff members from both entities. Mayor Tedesco called the meeting to order at 12:00
Noon. He announced that the City had today received official notification that they had been named
an Entitlement City, having reached a population of 50,000.
Kim Russel, MGMC Chief Executive Officer, thanked the City for assisting with their recent bond
refinancing procedures. She advised that the hospital will realize a net savings over the 20 years of
approximately $2.7 million. Ms. Russel stated that construction of the North Addition is now
complete. She announced that an open house and building dedication will be held on September 21,
2003, from 11 AM to 2 PM.
Ms. Russel introduced Neal Loes, Vice-President, who gave an update on Patient Quality and Safety
Activities being undertaken by the hospital. He described the Board of Trustee’s role and strategies
used to ensure quality care for all patients.
Ms. Russel then introduced Lynn Whisler, Vice-President, who presented information about the new
Cancer Resource Center in the North Addition. She described the services to be offered through this
Center and how a patient accesses these services. Ms. Whisler stated that the Mary Greeley Medical
Center Foundation, through the “Help Us Help You” campaign, funded the facility construction,
furniture and equipment, and the endowment fund for the future.
Ms. Whisler invited those in attendance to tour the North Addition immediately after this meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 12:45 p.m.
