OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AND HOSPITAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES
AMES, IOWA AUGUST 18, 2004
The Ames City Council and the Hospital Board of Trustees met in joint session at 12:00 Noon on
the 18th day of August, 2004, in the Mary Greeley Medical Center (MGMC) South Auditorium.
Those in attendance from the City Council were Mayor Ted Tedesco and Council Members Russ
Cross, Steve Goodhue, Riad Mahayni, and Daryle Vegge. Council Members Matthew Goodman
and Sharon Wirth were absent. Board of Trustees Members Sarah Buck, Karl Friederich, Mary
Kitchell, and Ken McCuskey were present. Also attending were MGMC Vice-Presidents Neal Loes
and Toni Shropshire, City Manager Steve Schainker, and City Attorney John Klaus.
Sarah Buck welcomed the Mayor and City Council, Hospital Board of Trustees, and administrative
staff members from both entities. Mayor Tedesco called the meeting to order at 12:10 p.m.
Kim Russel, MGMC Chief Executive Officer, gave a presentation on the economic impact of health
care to the state of Iowa. A brochure entitled, “Iowa Hospitals...,” was distributed to those present.
Brian Dieter, Vice-President/Chief Financial Officer of MGMC, reported on the Medical Center’s
Financial Assistance Program, which serves patients who do not meet the guidelines to receive
county, state, or federal aid. Eileen Mullan, HOMEWARD/Hospice Director, presented information
on MGMC’s Home Hospice Services Program. Lynn Whisler, MGMC Vice-President, described
the hospital’s Mobile Intensive Care Services. The meeting culminated in a tour of MGMC
Emergency Services Department by Marilyn Polito, Director of Emergency Services, and Rich Lee,
EMS Coordinator.
The meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
