OF THE AMES CITY COUNCIL
AND HOSPITAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES
AMES, IOWA OCTOBER 13, 2005
The Ames City Council and the Hospital Board of Trustees met in joint session at 12:00 Noon on
the 13th day of October, 2005, in the Mary Greeley Medical Center (MGMC) North Addition
Conference Rooms A & B. Those in attendance from the City Council were Mayor Ted Tedesco and
Council Members Matthew Goodman and Riad Mahayni. Council Members Russ Cross, Steve
Goodhue, Daryle Vegge, and Sharon Wirth were absent. Board of Trustees Members Sarah Buck,
Karl Friederich, Mary Kitchell, Ken McCuskey, and Emil Peterson were present. Also attending
were MGMC President and CEO Kim Russel, CFO/Vice-President Brian Dieter, Vice-Presidents
Lynn Whisler and Toni Shropshire, Chief of Medical Staff James Friederich, MGMC Foundation
Director Bob Ravenscroft, Assistant City Manager Bob Kindred, and City Attorney John Klaus.
Board of Trustees Chairperson Sarah Buck and Mayor Tedesco welcomed the Mayor and City
Council, Hospital Board of Trustees, and administrative staff members from both entities.
Lynn Whisler described major community events (Iowa Special Olympics, Iowa Games, Iowa State
events, and athletic and cultural activities) at which MGMC staff voluntarily provided medical and
emergency service. Medical staff volunteered 1,280 hours at those types of events in 2005, which
equates to a contribution of over $100,000. It is anticipated that the number of hours will increase
in 2006 due to the National Special Olympics being held in Ames.
Kim Russel gave a presentation on the partnership between MGMC and McFarland Clinic. She
explained that the entities have different organizational structures, but share similar mission
statements. Ms. Russel cited examples of different services that have been made possible due to the
collaboration between MGMC and McFarland Clinic. Steve Koger, President of McFarland Clinic,
shared similar comments about the strong partnership between the two entities.
Mayor Tedesco asked what makes Ames attractive to physicians. Ms. Russel indicated that housing
options are a concern. The quality of Ames Schools, stability of the Midwest Region, and diversity
draw physicians to this community.
Sarah Buck asked the City representatives what topics they would like to discuss with MGMC
representatives at future meetings. Mayor Tedesco suggested that security issues could be on a
future agenda.
The meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
