HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - Requests from Ames Public Library for Ames Bike Fair on May 31, 2025RESOLUTION NO. 25-138 RESOLUTION APPROVING WAIVER OF PARKING METER FEES FOR AMES BIKE FAIR FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA WHEREAS, the Ames Public Library is planning to host a Bike Fair on May 31, 2025, to foster bike skills and safety. The event is hosted in collaboration with Parks and Recreation and Public Works providing trail information, as well as the Police Department assisting with promoting bike registration; and, WHEREAS, participants will be able to participate in a Bike Rodeo to practice safety skills. A repair station will be available at the Library in conjunction with the event. Safe Routes to School will be facilitating the Bike Rodeo and giving away helmets to those who need them; and, WHEREAS, in order to facilitate the event, the Library has requested closure of Douglas Avenue from 5th Street to 6th Street from 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.; and, WHEREAS, Public Works will provide barricades and vests for the street closures; and, WHEREAS, the Library has requested suspension of parking enforcement on Douglas Avenue from 5th Street to 6th Street from 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.; and, WHEREAS, the Saturday morning activities will require the closure of 17 metered parking spaces for 4.5 metered hours, resulting in a loss of approximately $19.13 to the Parking Fund. Organizers have requested that this amount be waived by the City Council; and, WHEREAS, given the small dollar amount and number of parking spaces involved, staff believes it is reasonable to waive the parking fees for this event; and, WHEREAS, this event is hosted by the Ames Public Library in conjunction with several City Departments. The event will increase safety and knowledge for bikers in the community which works to further sustainability goals as well. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa, that waiver of parking meter fees for Ames Bike Fair on May 31, 2025, is hereby approved.
