RESOLUTION APPROVING 30-YEAR LEASE AGREEMENT WITH
AMES YOUTH SPORTS COMPLEX, INC. FOR CITY PROPERTY LOCATED
SOUTH OF U.S. HIGHWAY 30 AND WEST OF THE SOUTH SKUNK RIVER
FOR THE CITY OF AMES, IOWA
WHEREAS, in 1994, the City leased a property west of the South Skunk River and south
of U.S. Highway 30 to Ames Youth Sports Complex, Inc. (AYSC), which represents several
separate non-profit youth sports groups. The property was then developed into the Hunziker Youth
Sports Complex; and,
WHEREAS, the property is furnished to AYSC in consideration of the organization
providing a youth sports program for the community. This programming provides recreational
opportunities and enhanced well-being for Ames residents; and,
WHEREAS, the availability of such recreational amenities and improved well-being, in
turn, enhances the economic development of the community by making it more likely that
businesses and their employees will be attracted to locate in Ames; and,
WHEREAS, a separate lease was entered into in May 2002 on the same terms as the
original lease, but for an adjacent portion of the City property. This created the area that is today
occupied by the complex; and,
WHEREAS, both leases expire on February 28, 2025, and City staff has prepared a new
lease that would extend from March 1, 2025, through February 28, 2055. The agreement maintains
a number of the terms from the original two leases, but revisions have been included to reflect
changes that have occurred on the site since 1994 as well as clarifications for certain expectations.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Ames, Iowa,
that the 30-year lease agreement with Ames Youth Sports Complex, Inc. for City property located
south of U.S. Highway 30 and west of the South Skunk River is hereby approved.
ADOPTED THIS 11th day of March, 2025.
