AMES HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
Meeting held via Zoom
Thursday, April 15, 2021
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 5:35pm by Vice Chair Wayne Clinton.
Members Present: Wayne Clinton, Jahmai Fisher, Komivi (Moses) Amekedzi
Member(s) Absent: Leslie Ginder, Madesh Samanu
Staff Liaison: Deb Schildroth
Guest(s): Craig Kaufman, Auditorium/Bandshell/Community Center Manager
Welcome New Commissioners and Introductions: Introductions were made.
Selection of Commission Chair and Vice-Chair: As the Commission knew that Chair
Jill Crosser would be stepping down from her role, the Commission reached out to an
existing member who indicated willingness to assume the roll of Chair.
Moved by Moses, seconded by Clinton to appoint Jahmai Fisher as the Chair of the
Ames Human Relations Commission. Motion carried unanimously.
Chair Fisher shared that she is honored to serve in role and is excited that her fellow
Commissioners do believe that this is something that she can undertak e.
Moved by Chair Fisher, seconded by Clinton to sustain Wayne Clinton as Vice -Chair of
the Ames Human Relation Commission. Motion carried unanimously.
Approval of Minutes: Moved by Clinton to approve the minutes of the March 18th, 2021
meeting. Motion caried unanimously.
Public Forum: There was no one present for public forum.
Potential Partnership Opportunity with Music Event through Ames Parks and
Recreation Department: Craig Kaufman gave an overview of the event Parks and
Recreation is planning to host in the Spring of 2022 that centers around Colorado based
Hip Hop Duo, the ReMINDers. Kaufman is looking for:
• People/Groups/Organizations to promote the event.
• Networking opportunities with community members who could potent ially partner
with this event.
• Networking opportunities with community members who would potentially
sponsor the event.
Clinton started the conversation around Commission involvement by stating that this
event is something very interesting to bring to the community, especially for the youth in
the community.
Moved by Clinton, seconded by Chair Fisher to partner with the City in the promotion of
this event for Spring of 2022. Motion carried unanimously.
Time was taken to show a video of the ReMINDers, discuss the logistics of the event,
discuss other community partners/sponsors, express concerns, and create an
understanding of the intended outcome of the event.
Assistant City Manager Schildroth read through the Commissions strategic plan, and it
was noted that this even did fall in line with the strategic plan.
After much discussion, Commission members present at the meeting felt as though this
event should be considered all members of the Commission before extending a formal
partnership.
Moved by Clinton, seconded by Chair Fisher to amend the previous motion and defer
final action on this event until more members of the Commission are present for
consideration by placing this action item on the agenda for the next meeting. Motion
carried unanimously.
Approval of Fair Housing Month Ad in the Story County Sun: The Housing
Coordinator for the City of Ames, Vanessa Latimer-Baker, reached out to Assistant City
Manager Schildroth to see if the Commission would be interested in partnering with her
to run a Fair Housing ad in the Story County Sun. The cost for a half page ad is $1,200
or $2,700 for a full-page ad. Latimer-Baker would like to run a half page ad which would
be a $600 expense to the Commission. This ad would run in the Wednesday, April 21,
2021 issue of the Story County Sun.
Moved by Clinton, seconded by Chair Fisher to approve the Fair Housing Month ad and
to expend $600 towards the cost of the placement of the ad in the Story County Sun.
Motion carried unanimously.
Annual Report Final Review: The Annual Report will be presented to the City Council
in a joint meeting with the Ames Human Relations Commission on Tuesday, May 25th,
2021.
Discussion was had on the final revisions to the report and to the logistics of the joint
City Council meeting.
Moved by Clinton, seconded by Chair Fisher to approve the report as submitted. Motion
carried unanimously.
Postings and Social Media Content: Discussion was had on the progress of the social
media postings discussed at previous meetings. Chair Fisher expressed that with the
change of the term on April 1, 2021, May would serve as a good time for the
Commission to introduce changes in their membership to the community.
Moved by Chair Fisher, seconded by Clinton to have the new Commission members
information be updated on the Ames Human Relations webpage as well as a social
media announcement regarding changes in the Commission. Motion carried
unanimously.
Commissioner Announcements: Clinton thanked the Commission members who
attended the March 29th, 2021 Ames History Museum mural unveiling for being there to
support the event. Clinton was very impressed with how the event went.
On Wednesday, April 14th, 2021, Clinton gave a virtual presentation via the Ames
History Museum’s Spring lecture series. Commission members and the public are
invited to view the recorded presentation. Chair Fisher was able to attend the live
presentation and was very proud of Clinton communicating his story.
Next Meeting: May 27th, 2021 at 5:30 pm.
Adjournment: Moved by Clinton to adjourn the meeting at 6:52 pm.
