HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - February 25, 2021, AHRC MinutesMinutes AMES HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION Meeting held via Zoom Thursday, February 25, 2021 Call to Order: The meet was called to order at 5:31pm by Chair Jill Crosser. Members Present: Jill Crosser, Wayne Clinton, Jahmai Fisher, Leslie Ginder Member(s) Absent: Madesh Samanu Staff Liaison: Deb Schildroth Approval of Minutes: Wayne Clinton moved approval of the January 28th, 2021 minutes. Leslie Ginder seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Public Forum: There was no one present for public forum. Home for Everyone Award Publicity: Nominations are currently being accepted for the Home for Everyone Award. Both individuals and organizations are eligible to receive the award. In order to advertise the award, Commission members will be reaching out to members of the community who they believe might know someone worthy of nomination. In addition, Commission members will advertise the award on their personal social media pages and the Mayor will announce the award at the upcoming City Council meeting. The submission deadline is March 17th. Annual Report Review: Chair Crosser presented a draft of the Annual Report to the Commission members for feedback. This report encompasses Commission happenings for the 2020 calendar year. The Commission discussed the content of the report which opened the floor to thoughts on what the Commission would like to accomplish in 2021. Chair Crosser will use feedback from this meeting to revise the report. Any further feedback from the Commission is encouraged and can be communicated to Chair Crosser via email. The final draft of the report will be presented at the next meeting for approval. Postings and Social Media Content: Updates were provided on the social media posts voted on at the January 28th meeting. Idea Month Follow-up Update Photo of Clinton as the keynote speaker at the MLK Jr. in coordination with the video of his speech February Deb Posted to the City of Ames Social Media Group photo of those in the auditorium at the MLK Jr. Celebration February Deb Posted to the City of Ames Social Media Video celebrating Deaf History Month March 15th – April 15th Leslie Ginder Ginder was able to connect with a member of the Deaf community who is interested in being in an informational video. The Commission would like to post one video at the beginning of Deaf History Month, and another about two weeks later. Ginder will finalize a plan for the video in the next week and reach out to Media Productions to set up filming. Photo of Video celebrating Women’s History Month March 1st – March 31st Chair Jill Crosser Chair Crosser will be reaching out to the History museum to get a statement on Women’s History in Iowa. Partnership post with the Ames Community School District on their BLM Curriculum February Chair Jill Crosser Chair Crosser reached out to Dr. Jones with Ames Community School district but has yet to hear back. Chair Crosser will send out follow-up communication in hopes of receiving a statement. Ames History Museum Downtown mural unveiling February Co-Chair Wayne Clinton The mural will be hung on 6th and Douglas and will be unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Ames Chamber of Commerce. Clinton will be speaking at the event so he will send an invitation to the Commission as soon as the date is set. In addition, Fisher is involved with two different events that will be featured in social media posts. First, Fisher participated in a virtual reading event with the Library. She was able to give a shout out to AHRC during her reading and will notify the Commission when her reading is posted so it can be shared accordingly. Second, Fisher will be speaking at a Black History Month Mini Conference hosted by Ames High School on February 26th. It was agreed upon that an announcement regarding her involvement in the event will be posted to the City of Ames Facebook page prior to the event. Commissioner Announcements: Assistant City Manager Schildroth updated the Commission on conversation she had with a community member that may need to file a complaint. No further Commissioner Announcements. Next Meeting: March 18th, 2021 at 5:30 pm. Adjournment: Moved by Clinton to adjourn the meeting at 6:46pm.
