HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - January 28, 2021, AHRC MinutesMinutes AMES HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION Meeting held via Zoom Thursday, January 28, 2021 Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 5:30pm by Chair Jill Crosser. Members Present: Jill Crosser, Wayne Clinton, Jahmai Fisher, Leslie Ginder, Madesh Samanu Member(s) Absent: None Staff Liaison: Deb Schildroth Approval of Minutes: Jahmai Fisher moved approval of the December 17th, 2020 minutes. Madesh Samanu seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Public Forum: There was no one present for public forum. The time was used to introduce the new individual providing administrative support to the Commission. Discussion of New Date/Time for Monthly Meetings: Chair Crosser announced her move from Ames to Grimes. She will be unable to seek another term with the Commission. A new member will be appointed. Chair Crosser left the conversation open for Commission members to discuss meeting times. Suggestions were made by Commission members for a new date/time for monthly meetings. After thorough discussion, Commission members decided to keep the meeting schedule for the spring semester and summer, except for two dates. The March meeting will take place on the 18th and the April meeting will be held on the 15th. The Commission will re-evaluate the meeting schedule for the fall semester at a later meeting. Discussion of MLK Jr. Community Celebration and Humanitarian Award: The Commission reported that the celebration was a success with impressive number of views via YouTube and Facebook Watch. Discussion of the pluses and deltas of the event lead to a series of ideas for how to approach the event next year. One noteworthy idea was a location change. The event has been previously held at the Ames Middle School Auditorium. Next year, the event may be moved to the Ames City Auditorium so that Channel 12 can broadcast the event. All who participated in the planning and organization of the event will be asked to help/attend again next year. Annual Report Review: In April, the Commission will have a joint meeting with City Council to present the annual report. Chair Crosser will draft the 2020 report for the Commission to review at the February 25th, 2021 meeting. Fisher left the meeting at 5:57pm. Postings and Social Media Content: Guidelines: A guidelines draft was reviewed by the Commission. Each meeting, members will vote on social media content and posts to be forwarded to the Public Relations Officer for consideration. Posts must align with organizational goals, promote public engagement, and credit the Commission for the post. Moved by Clinton to approve the guidelines, motion seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Ideas: Commission member discussed and recommended suggestions for future social media content. Samanu seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Commissioner Announcements: Clinton provided updates on community happenings that may interest the Commission. At the next Rotary meeting, Clinton will be giving a speech on Black History Month. The Ames History Museum will be unveiling a mural at their Downtown location that was worked on in conjunction with the Iowa State University Art Department. The mural is expected to be unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony sometime in February. Clinton will keep the commission up to date on the event. Chair Crosser moved to make this event number six on the list of social media posts. Ginder seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Commission members are requested to attend if available. Next Meeting: Thursday, February 25th, 2021 at 5:30pm. Adjournment: Moved by Samanu to adjourn the meeting at 6:30pm.
