AMES HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
Special Meeting Held via Zoom
Thursday, April 7, 2022
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 5:02 p.m. by Chair Jahmai Fisher. Members
present were Wayne Clinton, Chunhui Chen, and Lynette Plander. City of Ames Staff Liaison Deb
Schildroth was also present. Members absent were Madesh Samanu. The meeting was held
electronically.
Approval of Minutes: Moved by Clinton, seconded by Chen, to approve the minutes of the March
24, 2022 meeting. Motion carried unanimously.
Public Forum: Chair Fisher opened the Public Forum. No one was present to speak, and Chair
Fisher closed the Public Forum.
Home for Everyone Award – Recipient Selection: Six nominations were received for a Home for
Everyone Award. All submissions were received before the deadline and only one submission
lacked a narrative.
Commission members reviewed the submissions:
• Alan Christy
• Habitat for Humanity of Central Iowa
• Lori Allen of Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance
• Lynn Owens-Hill of The Bridge Home
• Story County Community Housing Co.
• Tara Brown of The Bridge Home
Assistant City Manager Schildroth noted that Tara Brown of The Bridge Home received the 2021
a Home for Everyone Award. The Commission members agreed to remove Tara Brown from
consideration for the 2022 award.
Moved by Clinton to award the 2022 a Home for Everyone Award to Alan Christy and Lori Allan.
Motion not seconded; motion failed.
Moved by Chair Fisher, seconded by Plander, to award one 2022 a Home for Everyone Award.
Motion carried unanimously.
Moved by Chair Fisher, seconded by Chen, to award the 2022 a Home for Everyone Award to
Alan Christy. Motion carried unanimously.
Assistant City Manager Schildroth reviewed that the award will be presented at the April 26, 2022
City Council meeting to coincide with Fair Housing Month. She noted that she will reach out to
the award recipient to ensure they can be present at the meeting.
Approval of Fair Housing Month Advertisement in the Story County Sun: Vanessa Baker-
Latimer, Housing Coordinator, requested to partner with the Commission to run a Fair Housing
advertisement in the Story County Sun. Assistant City Manager Schildroth noted that the cost of
the advertisement is $1,295 and Baker-Latimer requested $431 in financial support from the
Commission.
Moved by Chair Fisher, seconded by Clinton, to approve the Fair Housing Month Advertisement
in the Story County Sun in coordination with the City of Ames Housing Department. Motion
carried unanimously.
Assistant City Manager Schildroth informed the Commission that Baker -Latimer will be receiving
the Fair Housing Month proclamation at the April 12, 2022 City Council Meeting. She noted
Commission members are invited to attend if they wish.
Commissioner Announcements: Clinton noted that he will be traveling during the date of the
May Commission meeting. He asked the Commission members to think about an alternative date
to hold the May meeting to be discussed at the April 28, 2022 meeting. He noted that if the May
meeting cannot be rescheduled, he would be available to join electronically or telephonically to
participate. Chair Fisher noted that she has a potential conflict with the May meeting as well and
agreed with Clinton to discuss potential dates to reschedule at the next meeting.
