COMMISSION ON THE ARTS
Council Chambers

Monday, October 5, 2020
Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 5:04 p.m. by Tom Lockhart. Members present were Deanne
Brill, Steven Kawaler, Tom Lockhart, and Troy Rutter. Natalie Robinson was not present. Staff
member Brian Phillips was also present.
Public Forum
There was no one present for Public Forum
Approval of the September 14, 2020 Minutes
Troy moved and Steven seconded to approve the minutes of the September 14, 2020 Meeting.
Motion carried unanimously.
Spring Special Project Grant Hearings
Town and Gown – Joe Merchant, president of Ames Town and Gown, outlined the plan to hold a
lecture celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.
Story Theater Company – Sue Ann Peters outlined the request to host online programming to keep
theater students engaged when they cannot meet in person.
Ames Community Arts Council – Jen Brockpahler described the concept of building a mobile stage
to bring performances to various neighborhoods.
Brian described the next steps for the Commissioners to make their recommendations.
Fall 2020 Special Project Grant Amendment Requests
Brian described the requests from the Octagon and Ames Town and Gown to extend their fall 2020
Special Project Grant contracts into the next calendar year.
Troy expressed concern about the Octagon request, because it was for the next fiscal year; he felt
it should be included in the annual grant request. Deanne and Steven indicated support for the
Octagon’s request.
It was moved by Tom, seconded by Deanne, to recommend to the City Council that the requests
be approved from Ames Town and Gown to extend the grant timeline and modify what funds can
be used for, and from the Octagon to extend the grant timeline. Motion carried unanimously.
Upcoming Important Dates
Tom noted that he will provide information to Commissioners regarding the COTA survey.

Tom moved the meeting be adjourned. The meeting adjourned at 5:36 p.m.
