HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - November 1, 2021, COTA Meeting MinutesMinutes COMMISSION ON THE ARTS Council Chambers, City Hall Monday, November 1, 2021 Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Tom Lockhart. Members present were Deanne Brill, Dave Detlefs, Nancy Gebhart, and Steve Kawaler. Public Forum Stan Rabe, representing ACTORS, announced that Lucky Stiff is going up on November 11, and he will be dead, on stage. It was announced that Ames Town and Gown will have a live pianist perform at 7:30 on Thursday in the Martha Ellen Tye Recital Hall in the Music Building on the ISU campus. A lecture, supported by COTA, will be held at the Library on Saturday. Sue Ann Peters, representing Story Theater Company, indicated You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown will be opening in the next couple weeks. She expressed appreciation for the Commission’s support. Approval of the October 4, 2021 Minutes Dave moved and Steve seconded to approve the minutes of the October 4, 2021 meeting. Motion carried unanimously. 2021/22 Annual Grant Hearings Representatives from each of the organizations below described their proposals: Ames Children’s Choir Ames Choral Society Good Company Ames Town and Gown ACTORS Friends of Ames Strings Ames Chapter, DMMO Guild Ames Community Arts Council Co’Motion Dance Theater & Kids Co’Motion Octagon Center for the Arts Story Theater Company Senior Variety Show Central Iowa Symphony Dancenter Dancer Company Foundation AIOFA KHOI Ames Chamber Artists There was no representative in attendance from Iowa Youth Ballet. The Commission members had questions regarding the application from this organization. It was moved by Tom, seconded by Steve, to reach out to Iowa Youth Ballet to indicate that the application would not be considered this year but that we would assist with understanding the grant requirements in the future. Motion carried unanimously. 2021/22 Spring Special Project Grant Recommendations: It was moved by Dave, seconded by Deanne, to recommend Spring Special Project Grant awards in the following amounts: ACAC - $3,000 Ames Town and Gown - $1,500 Des Moines Metro Opera Guild - $540 Octagon Center for the Arts - $3,000 Story Theater Company (Increased Production Costs) – $2,660 Story Theater Company (Shrek Matinee) - $3,000 ACTORS - $1,641 Motion carried unanimously. Upcoming Important Dates Tom reviewed the upcoming important dates. Adjournment There being no further business before the Commission, the meeting adjourned at 6:34 p.m.
