COMMISSION ON THE ARTS
Monday, January 4, 2021
Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 5:02 p.m. by Tom Lockhart. Members present were Deanne
Brill, Steven Kawaler, Tom Lockhart, Natalie Robinson, and Troy Rutter. Staff member Brian
Phillips was also present.
Public Forum
Approval of the November 2, 2020 Minutes
Natalie moved and Deanne seconded to approve the minutes of the November 2, 2020
meeting. Motion carried unanimously.
Approval of Annual Grant Recommendations
Tom noted the recommendations appeared to be in close alignment. Brian noted the next steps
in the process. Steve asked whether historically there was more demand for special projects
than available funding. Tom indicated the requests tend to hover around $5,000 - $6,000.
It was moved by Tom, seconded by Troy, to recommend annual grant awards in the amounts

Annual Grant Paragraph Assignments
Paragraphs were assigned to Commissioners for drafting and revision as follows:
Deanne: ACTORS, AIOFA, Ames Chamber Artists
Natalie: Ames Childrens Choir, Ames Choral Sociatey, ACAC
Troy: Central Iowa Symphony, Dancenter, Friends of Ames Strings
Steve: Good Company, India Cultural Association, KHOI
Tom: Kids CoMotion, Octagon, Story Theater Company, Town and Gown
Request from Ames Town and Gown to postpone Spring 2021 Special Project Grant
William Dilla, representing Ames Town and Gown, explained that the Town and Gown board
has requested to postpone its lecture on Beethoven to between September 2021 and May
2022. The organization is requesting a postponement to next fiscal year, and flexibility to hold
the lecture on a topic different than Beethoven if the artist requests to do so.
It was moved by Tom, seconded by Natalie to recommend that the City Council carry the
funding forward into the next fiscal year and amend the contract to provide more flexibility.
Motion carried unanimously.

Tom reviewed the upcoming meeting dates.
Tom moved the meeting be adjourned. The meeting adjourned at 5:24 p.m.
