HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - October 3, 2022, COTA Meeting MinutesMinutes COMMISSION ON THE ARTS Council Chambers, City Hall Monday, October 3, 2022 Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Nancy Gebhart. Members present were Deanne Brill, Dave Detlefs, Steve Kawaler, and Jaime Reyes. Public Forum There was no one was in attendance for the public forum . Approval of the September 12, 2022 Minutes It was moved by Dave, seconded by Deanne, to approve the minutes of the September 12, 2022 meeting. Motion carried unanimously. Spring 2023 Special Project Grant Hearings: Good Company – Ellen Rasmussen and Julie Muselic described how they have updated the website, but now would like to stock it with photography and advertise the organization to others. India Cultural Association – Manu Agnihotri explained the proposal to put on a play in Hindi with English subtitles. Funds will be used for sets and costumes. The show will be February 25 - 26 in the City Auditorium. Story Theater Company – Sue Ann Peters presented the proposal for an additional play: “Charlotte’s Web.” She indicated many venues the organization uses are sold out, so the program will use the City Auditorium to accommodate a larger audience. Ames Chapter of DMMO – The grant proposal is for a children’s opera. The funds will be to pay the opera production company, and the costs to rent a digital piano. It is expected there will be no charge for admissions. Approximately 100 people are anticipated to attend. The event will be held at the Library, and the Library will assist with publicity. DMMO has created an opera specifically for children. It is not based on a single opera. The music will expose the audience to a variety of opera styles and music. Iowa Youth Ballet – Serica Myers represented the organization and indicated t hat the proposed program will target underprivileged youth in the community. Octagon Center for the Arts – Vivian Cook presented a proposal for an exhibit called unTITled. The project will celebrate breasts from the perspective of those who have had breasts and let them go. Ames Chamber Artists – Chris Johnson indicated there would be an additional concert as part of the proposed grant. Upcoming Important Dates a. 2023/24 Annual Grant Applications due October 14 b. Next Meeting: November 7, 2022 Adjourn There being no further business before the Commission, the meeting adjourned at 5:28 p.m.
