Story County—Lisa Heddens reported that the County is holding regular work sessions to discuss and
review an application process for external applicants to request American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)
funds. They are waiting for additional guidance from the U.S. Treasury and will discuss this in more
detail on the Board agenda next week. Latifah Faisal reported that emergency rental assistance funds
are still available. Good Neighbor had applied for some of those funds and reported that they have
assisted over 80 households so far. If anyone is needing rental assistance, they should contact Story
County Community Services.
City of Ames— On behalf of the Ames City Counsel, Mayor John Haila thanked volunteers for their
work in ASSET. He stressed that collaboration is key to the success of programming in Story County.
The City captures a 1% sales tax to fund ASSET. The City Council is 100% committed to the ASSET
process, we are very proud of this collaboration in the community.
Mayor Haila reported that in conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Month in May, the City
hosted a public forum on May 20 to address mental health concerns, identify symptoms of mental
illness, and connect residents with resources in central Iowa. The keynote speaker was Jason Haglund,
a local leader in the behavioral healthcare field. The focus of his talk was on identifying and responding
to stress and anxiety brought on by the pandemic. This event included a panel discussion featuring
representatives from Iowa State University, Ames Community School District, National Alliance for
Mentally Ill (NAMI), Central Iowa Community Services (CICS) Mental Health Region, and others.
City Council is serving as the steering committee for the development of the City’s first Climate Action
Plan. A citizens input committee has been appointed representing individuals from 12 different
community sectors such as business, residential and faith-based. . The City is not only looking for input
from those sectors but also engaging underrepresented community members. Gloria Betcher shared
that the City is working with a Community and Regional Planning class at ISU to create a Civic
Engagement Festival. It will involve several locations throughout the City - Franklin Park, Reliable
Street, Eastwood and downtown at 5th and Burnett.
In addition, September is National Suicide Prevention month. The Ames Police Department is
partnering with other local organizations to host the Story County Mental Health Expo on Sept. 21. This
community event will provide information and resources to understand and support mental health
issues including trauma, stress, and substance abuse. The keynote speaker will be Kevin Hines, a
prominent international suicide prevention speaker and mental health advocate. Lastly, there were
Mental Health First Aid training sessions offered over the summer and training was provided to
approximately 100 individuals.
United Way of Story County—Jean Kresse reported that they still have some COVID emergency funds
available. Part of the funds went to support Food Pantries. The United Ways of Iowa (statewide
association) was approached by the Governor’s office to help with vaccine distribution. United Way of
Story County is working with Story County Public Health to set up clinics and offer incentives. On
August 26 a clinic was held at Nevada Public Library where 85 individuals were vaccinated. An incentive
of a $25 gift card is provided for each vaccine. A pop-up clinic was also offered at Brookside Park by

Funder Priorities Checklist Pilot with Agencies
Anneke Mundel stated that 3 agencies to-date have agreed to pilot the Funder Priorities Checklist Pilot.
A group of the volunteers (Jane Acker, Quinn Wood, Mary Beth Golemo) helped review and develop
the forms. The goal is to make the process easier for funders and volunteers. Agencies will identify
which priorities they are meeting by funder. Eventually, this will be rolled out with all the partner
agencies.
Work Teams will meet in December to review Scorecard data. Anneke will be available for assistance
with data interpretation. Dates for the ClearImpact Scorecard Work Team Scorecard Reviews are set
for December 6 and 7 at 5:00 pm and following the next ASSET Board Meeting on December 9 at 6:30
pm.
Mayor Haila asked how the Community Assessment Survey factored in individual funder priorities and
are there new priorities because of the data provided. All funders present stated that the needs
assessment impacted the priority areas.
