HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - PAC Meeting Minutes 11/04/20Page 1 of 3 PUBLIC ART COMMISSION, CITY OF AMES MEETING MINUTES – November 4, 2020 AMES CITY HALL, HELD VIA ZOOM VIRTUAL MEETING Present: Sara Sherman (Chair), Penny Adam (Secretary), Erica Briest, Taylor Carlson, Angie DeWaard (Vice Chair), Karen George (Treasurer), Amanda Gigler, Claire Kruesel, Olivia Madison, Brian Phillips (Interim City Liaison), James (Jim) Surber, Andrew Ward, Candace Zwank Absent: Paola Sepulveda Public Forum/Guests: none in attendance A. Call to Order—Sara Sherman, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:01pm. B. Approval of November 4, 2020 Agenda (Sara Sherman, Chair) Erica Briest moved and Taylor Carlson seconded to approve the agenda without changes or corrections. C. Approval of October 7, 2020 Minutes (Penny Adam, Secretary) Andrew Ward moved and Angie DeWaard seconded to approve the minutes were approved without changes or corrections. D. Treasurer’s Report (Karen George, Treasurer) the treasury report was provided. E. Public Forum N/A F. Chair’s Report and Comments (Sara Sherman) G. City of Ames Liaison Comments (Brian Phillips, interim Liaison) The PAC approved decommissioning of “Resonance” is on the consent agenda for the City Council meeting on Tuesday, November 10; Angie may be able to attend. H. Old Business 1. PAC projects a. Celebration Planning (25th Year of AAOSE and 30th Year of PAC), and overview of the meeting held October 28, 2020 is summarized in a separate document. Olivia Madison briefly items needing feedback from PAC. i. A PAC member of the Public Relations Committee is requested to join the Celebration Planning committee; Sara and Taylor will share this opportunity. ii. A contest with selfies taken with AAOSE / Neighborhood Sculptures and posted to a public social media account was described. PAC concurs to move this item forward with Celebration committee members pursuing. The “Who Am I?” idea could possibly be incorporated with the selfie concept, as a deeper consideration added onto a selfie submittal. iii. School-based youth events was described, PAC supports moving forward with this initiative. Page 2 of 3 iv. Community Outreach. After discussion on the electrical / utility boxes it was suggested this initiative is removed from Celebration Planning and instead becomes a part of Neighborhood Art. James Surber makes a motion this initiative is removed from Celebration Planning and into Neighborhood Art, Olivia Madison seconds. PAC unanimously approves this change. v. A mural painting contest, on mobile billboard-like material, was discussed. This activity could occur during Farmers Market(s) with eventual display space being determined. This generated much discussion and support within PAC to pursue. vi. Karen George asked about a logo identifying Celebration Planning; Olivia will follow-up with the appropriate City personnel. I. New Business 1. Dahlquist Light features downtown a. Brian Phillips reminds the group this item is not urgent, repairs can take place over several years if this is something PAC wants to have done. b. After discussion it was suggested this be added to a future agenda to further explore a course of action; does PAC want to repair or to pursue decommissioning? A third option is to not act on them now and let them age out. 2. Artist Workspace Partnership with COTA and The Octagon a. Artists Workspace is proposed as shared workspace, located within The Octagon, for artists’ use. b. Brian Phillips mentions there is 10K available however perhaps should be awarded based on proposals submitted. Brian clarifies this money is targeted for individual artists, the availability of which is tied to fiscal year end. c. Sara will add this to next month’s agenda for further discussion. J. Commission Committees, Liaison Reports, and Comments 1. Outreach (Olivia Madison and Erica Briest Co-Chairs; Andrew Ward, Penny Adam, Candace Zwank, and Amanda Gigler) a. Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (AAOSE); Olivia Madison has identified possible jurors (Kerry Dixon and a local teacher) suggesting one or two additional are considered for inclusion. Several people were suggested, Olivia will follow-up. b. Neighborhood Sculpture i. Press release announcing deadline to apply for sculptures from the 2020 collection; deadline is December 15, 2020. Sara Sherman will communicate with Jacque Higgins about inquiries from Neighborhoods for art. c. Art in the Park – no discussion 2. Public Relations (Paola Sepulveda as Chair; Taylor Carlson, and Sara Sherman) a. Festival and Event Participation for FY 2021 as a reminder to PAC members for purpose of volunteering coverage in the Commission booth, with regards to the current covid situation. i. Artwalk, June 2021 ii. Reiman Gardens, July 2021 iii. Octagon Art Festival, September 2021 Page 3 of 3 b. Taylor Carlson shared an update on the new AAOSE brochure reflecting the current sculptures and will send the proof copy to PAC members for review. Olivia Madison suggests a reference to the 25th of AAOSE is added to the brochure. 3. Collection Management (Angie DeWaard and James Surber as Co-Chairs; Olivia Madison, Claire Kruesel, and Karen George) a. City Hall Art Placement / Signage, removal and installation – no discussion b. PAC collection management database / system. Angie DeWaard has received the CDs and sees about 2/3 of the inventory is included. Photos, of several items, are missing. These should be obtained so this database is as accurate as possible; James offers to help take photos. K. For the Good of the Order The next PAC meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at 12:00 noon via Zoom virtual meeting. L. Adjournment (Chair) Sara adjourned the meeting at 1:14 pm.
