Chair’s Report and Comments (Sara Sherman) As an introduction for Taylor Carlson, Amanda Gigler, and Candace Zwank, Sara provided a brief summary of PAC as found in the Public Art Commission Bylaws. There are several initiatives planned and implemented by PAC, one being Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (AAOSE). PAC also maintains a presence at events around town; Art Walk on Main Street in early June, Reiman Gardens Art Fair in July, and The Octagon Art Festival in September. PAC members staff a booth at each event. G. City of Ames Liaison Comments (Brian Phillips, interim Liaison) Brian mentioned the City Council will discuss at next week’s meeting the possible reopening of the City including City Hall. This may indicate whether Art Walk can be held this spring and how future PAC meetings are conducted, whether they remain virtual for a while or can be conducted in-person. If the City opens, and PAC can meet at City Hall, there will be virtual access for these meetings. H. Old Business 1. PAC projects, initiatives, events looking forward to FY20, FY21 and FY22 a. Celebration Planning: 25th Year of AAOSE and 30th Year of PAC (Olivia Madison). Olivia suggested input and ideas to advance these celebrations may derive from PAC goals and membership as well Page 2 of 3 as involve past PAC chairs for historical aspect and programming. Olivia has been in touch with Jacque Higgins, and Amy, with the City to help cover historical aspects. Ames Community residents can be involved in planning as well. Olivia is working on a written proposal for review and discussion purposes at a future PAC meeting. b. Review highly rated projects from the 2019/2020 Strategic Initiatives Process, including 2020/2021 projects (low-hanging fruit) and celebration projects (Olivia and Angie). Angie reviewed results of a survey taken last year and discussed higher ranking items and “low hanging fruit” items that may be accomplished along with planning efforts for the celebrations of AAOSE (25th) and 30th Anniversary of PAC. Angie is in communications with Jacque. 2. Black Arts Festival & Music Festival a. Outcome of purchase (Sara Sherman). Sara reports the purchases are nearly completed with the artists receiving payment. Juliana Jones has asked how best to deliver artwork as the City office is closed. Brian Phillips suggested either a PAC member receive and store the work or Juliana can make an appointment with Brian at City Hall to make the transfer. Sara will provide Brian’s e-mail address to Juliana. Olivia asked that any plexi-glass is replaced with UV glass to help protect the art; PAC Collection Management would manage any replacement needed. b. Temporary public viewing and event – Following City Hall Opening – Deferred 3. Transformer Cabinet Mural Project Proposal Update (Andrew Ward, James Surber). James reviewed a proposal to pilot a project to wrap, or paint, electrical and/or traffic control boxes with public art. James and Josh Anderson (guest, Chase Decals {wraps}) presented price estimates for electrical box wraps, large and small sizes. A second document covered traffic control boxes; these boxes are fairly consistent in size. James is also looking into possible artists to provide either paintings or wraps. James suggests piloting a project to test each painted and wrapped boxes. Olivia made a motion to do further investigation to pursue wraps on at least two boxes on Main Street using funding out of the PAC budget; James seconded motion. The motion passed with all members present voting. Brian added that Deb Schildroth needs involvement in placement and ensuring required graphics remain visible. This pilot can be funded out of PAC funds; for larger funds a proposal to the City is needed. 4. Slices of Heaven Sculpture (Sara Sherman). Craig Gray, the artist, requested to keep the sculpture for one more year in Ames at no cost. Slices will remain in place; Eggcited will be installed across the street at location 10. Olivia suggested that as Slices is not in the candidate pool for voting this year, signage should be added indicating this sculpture was the winner of the 2019-20 vote. 5. Main Street Mural update (Claire Kruesel). The proposed mural, designed by Liz Lidgett design in Des Moines would be installed on the former Kosama location, 546 Main Street. It would include a UV coating for sun protection. It is thought the mural (about $5,000) is paid for by Ames Chamber and Ames Downtown however PAC may be able to assist with funding. Sara suggests Karen take a look at the PAC budget for potential funding source for further discussion by PAC at the June meeting. James Surber motioned that PAC explores to assist with funding by covering the cost of UV coating (about $1,000); Erica Briest seconded. Members present voted yes with one abstention. I.
