HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - PAC Meeting Minutes 01/08/20Page 1 of 2 PUBLIC ART COMMISSION, CITY OF AMES MEETING MINUTES – 1/8/2020 AMES CITY HALL, ROOM 135 Present: Olivia Madison (Chair), Penny Adam, Erica Briest, Cathy Carlyle, Matthew Corones, Kerry Dixon (Treasurer), Angie DeWaard, Tasheik Kerr (City Liaison), Paola Sepulveda, Sara Sherman (Vice- Chair), James Surber, Andrew Ward Absent: Claire Kruesel (Secretary), Karen George Public Forum/Guests: Ebby Brown, Ames Public Library A. Call to Order—Olivia Madison, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:06 pm. B. Approval of 12/4/2019 Minutes Kerry moved and Paola seconded to approve the minutes. Minutes were approved with no corrections. C. Treasurer’s Report 2020/2021 Budget, Ames City Council approval decision: Budget approved and Kerry needs someone to step forward to be trained for Treasurer position next year. D. Public Forum Ebby Brown (Black Arts & Music Festival or BAMF) – 12:30pm: Goal of festival is to raise awareness of black/African-American artists especially relating to their experiences. Ebby wants to partner with PAC to commission a piece from one of the artists, but needs direction on how to accomplish this task. The BAMF will take place at the Ames Public Library on February 8th & 9th, 2020. There are 6 visual artists, all from Central Iowa, that are participating. PAC Discussion: See Old Business E. Chair’s Report and Comments (Olivia Madison) PAC meeting agenda time (2020-2021) – February 5, 2020 mtg. James moved and Matthew seconded the February 2020 meeting be extended to 1:30 pm and motion passed. F. City of Ames Liaison Comments (Tasheik Kerr)—Nothing to report. G. Old Business 1. Public Art 2020 Spring installation updates: Waiting on the weather. 2. PAC projects & initiatives looking forward to FY20, FY21, and FY22: Angie explained a spreadsheet that ranked the survey answers from most popular to least popular to focus PAC on projects going forward. 25th Anniversary of AAOSE was #1, Art in the Park was 2nd, 30th Anniversary of PAC was 3rd. 3. Black Arts & Music Festival (Sara Sherman): Discussion centered on whether to buy a piece from the BAMF festival (5 artists) or commission a new piece from one of the artists. Kerry made a motion that we wait and look at what pieces are in the BAMF and then decide if PAC will purchase 1 or 2 pieces to be brought into the City’s Public Art Collection; Matthew made the second. Motion passed. Matthew volunteered to photograph the finalist pieces that have been selected for festival display on February 2-15 for discussion on potential purchase(s). Olivia requested that the commissioners review the exhibited artwork before our Febraury meeting. 4. Town & Gown through the Arts – not discussed Page 2 of 2 5. Chamber of Commerce/Mural Project: Waiting on information including financials. 6. Tedesco Parkway: We only have 4 submissions for AAOSE, so we may have to send out another call for submissions to get enough sculptures. Insurance has been approved to be taken care of by us and Olivia will contact Jerry Keys to let him know. 7. Other: None H. New Business 1. 10th Annual EcoFair Celebration on Saturday, April 25, 2020 Potential sustainability art exhibit in City Hall and PAC potential participation with a hands-on art activity for City Hall (See attached email from Tasheik Kerr dated 12-05-19): 2. Proposed gift – Ames International Partner Cities Association (AIPCA) – email from Lisa Shen, Chair, AIPCA. Will be discussed at February meeting. 3. Potential joint collaboration with the Ames Community Arts Council (ACAC) regarding a public mural (Penny Adam) 4. Other: Motion to extend deadline of AAOSE to January 31st was made by Kerry and seconded by Penny. Motion was approved. I. Commission Committees, Liaison Reports, and Comments 1. Outreach (Sara Sherman and Erica Briest, Co-Chairs) a. Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (AAOSE) — not discussed b. Neighborhood Sculpture—Kerry, Angie, Sara, and Erica will look at the 14 applications that were received. c. Chalk the Block event rescheduled — not discussed 2. Public Relations (Paola Sepulveda and Kerry Dixon, Co-Chairs) a. Festival & Event participation FY2020 and FY2021: James moved and Kerry seconded that we plan the 30th Anniversary Of PAC and 25th Anniversary of AAOSE; motion passed. b. Chamber of Commerce magazine article (K. Dixon) 3. Collection Management (Angie DeWaard and Olivia Madison, Chairs) a. PAC Collection Management Database/system — not discussed b. City Hall art placement/signage – removal and installation — not discussed J. For the Good of the Order The next PAC meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 12 pm in 135 Ames City Hall. Note: Meeting is rescheduled for Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 12:00-1:30 pm. K.
