MEETING MINUTES – October 6, 2021
AMES CITY HALL, ROOM 135
Present: Angie DeWaard (Chair), Penny Adam (Secretary), Erica Briest (Vice-Chair), Karen George (Treasurer),
Olivia Madison, Joseph Merchant, Brian Phillips (City Liaison), Paola Sepulveda, Sara Sherman,
Candace Zwank
Absent: Taylor Carlson, Amanda Gigler, Claire Kruesel, Aspen Pflanz, Elias Simpson
Public Forum / Guests: none in attendance
A. Call to Order – Angie DeWaard, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:21pm.
B. Approval of October 6, 2021 Agenda (Angie DeWaard, Chair)
Karen George moved and Paola Sepulveda seconded to approve the agenda. The agenda was approved
without changes or corrections.
C. Approval of September 1, 2021 Minutes (Penny Adam, Secretary)
Joseph Merchant moved and Erica Briest seconded to approve the minutes. The minutes were approved
without changes or corrections.
D. Treasurer’s Report for October 6, 2021 (Karen George, Treasurer)
Karen reviewed the status of the treasury.
E. Public Forum – N/A
F. Chair’s Report and Comments (Angie DeWaard)
1. Thank you to Sara Sherman for her term as chairman of PAC during difficulties presented by the
pandemic.
2. Elias Simpson is taking a leave of absence from PAC.
3. The Arts Capital Funding program is taking applications, this closes on December 3, 2021.
G. City of Ames Liaison Comments (Brian Phillips, City Liaison)
1. The recording of the Celebration is up on the City’s website.
2. “Balance” is repaired and reinstalled. Future discussion is needed, once incurred costs are known, by City
staff to facilitate repairs outside the Artist’s warranty.
3. RFQ will be issued soon for artwork to be installed in the new Downtown Plaza, $150,000 is budgeted for
the signature piece. The successful artist will be expected to make a public presentation. A couple
additional pieces are being incorporated into the Plaza design.
4. A comprehensive project is underway in City Hall to replace both the carpet and remaining wallcoverings
with a new color scheme being installed on the walls and floors. This may be a good opportunity to assess
the collection and move pieces of art around.
H. New Business
1. Discussion on potential changes to meeting time
a. Commission members are increasingly busy so changes may be needed for scheduled meeting times
while also following the open meetings laws. Discussion took place, Angie DeWaard and Brian Phillips
will revisit and get options out to the Commission members.
2. Fire hydrants
a. City Council has passed along a concept for residents to paint fire hydrants. Brief discussion took
place with the consensus being to table this until inflight projects, transformer cabinet murals and
storm drain intakes, are completed.
3. Remaining New Business agenda items will be discussed at a future meeting.
I. Old Business
1. Celebration Planning for the 25th Year of AAOSE and 30th Year of PAC. Overall consensus is the
Celebration was very successful. Mrs. Curtiss was pleased and sent a touching thank you note to Olivia
Madison.
2. Remaining Old Business agenda items will be discussed at a future meeting.
J. Commission Committees, Liaison Reports, and Comments
1. Outreach (Olivia Madison and Erica Briest Co-Chairs; Amanda Gigler, Candace Zwank, Penny Adam)
a. Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (AAOSE) entries opened October 1, 2021 and close January
28, 2022
b. Neighborhood Sculpture application closes on December 17, 2021. Let Outreach know if you want to
be on this subcommittee.
2. Public Relations (Paola Sepulveda and Sara Sherman as Co-Chairs; Taylor Carlson)
a. Festival and event participation for FY2021
3. Collection Management (Angie DeWaard and Amanda Gigler as Co-Chairs; Claire Kruesel, Karen George,
Olivia Madison)
a. The following agenda items are carried to a future meeting
1. Dog-Eared Books has been contacted regarding vandalism of “Lost in Space” and has agreed to
pay up to $750
2. Repairs to vandalism to “The Bronsons”, located in Arizona Circle, are underway
3. City Hall Art placement & signage, updates on removal and installation
4. PAC Collection GIS database
5. “This Is Living” AAOSE piece has a quarter stuck in its ear which Carly Watson is researching
6. Dahlquist downtown light features, tabled at this time with intention to work with Main Street
when resolution is pursued
7. Glowforge laser cutter, tabled at this time

The next PAC meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, November 3 at 12:00 noon in 135 Ames City Hall.
