HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - PAC Meeting Minutes 08/04/21PUBLIC ART COMMISSION, CITY OF AMES MEETING MINUTES – August 4, 2021 AMES CITY HALL, ROOM 135 Present: Angie DeWaard (Chair), Penny Adam (Secretary), Erica Briest (Vice-Chair), Karen George (Treasurer), Amanda Gigler, Claire Kruesel, Olivia Madison, Joseph Merchant, Aspen Pflanz, Paola Sepulveda, Elias Simpson, Carly Watson (for Brian Phillips), Candace Zwank Absent: Taylor Carlson, Brian Phillips (City Liaison), Sara Sherman Public Forum / Guests: none present A. Call to Order – Angie DeWaard, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:01pm. B. Approval of August 4, 2021 Agenda (Angie DeWaard, Chair) Erica Briest moved and Paola Sepulveda seconded to approve the agenda. The agenda was approved without corrections. C. Approval of July 7, 2021 Minutes (Penny Adam, Secretary) Olivia Madison moved and Karen George seconded to approve the minutes. Minutes were approved without corrections. D. Treasurer’s Report for August 4, 2021 (Karen George, Treasurer) Karen George reviewed the budget. A carry over letter for budget needs to be drafted, Carly Watson and Karen George will work on this together. E. Public Forum – N/A F. Chair’s Report and Comments (Angie DeWaard) 1. PAC will not pursue representation at a Farmer’s Market this summer due to the current covid-19 situation. a. Olivia Madison moves that PAC attends Farmer’s Market if/when there is an event to promote. This motion passed unanimously. G. City of Ames Liaison Comments (Carly Watson for Brian Phillips, City Liaison) 1. The artist looked at “The Bronsons” and suggested repairs which are underway. 2. The artist of “Balance” has made observations of the crack in the base. This sculpture is removed and back in his shop for repairs. 3. The AAOSE sculpture “This is Living” actually collects quarters via it’s parking meter component. This has been emptied and is ready for more. The artist indicates to put monies collected towards PAC. H. New Business 1. Transformer Cabinet Mural Project a. Sara Sherman worked with Josh on the template so submissions can be received over the winter months and installations can coincide with the next AAOSE installation of works. b. Discussion took place as to the longevity of the wraps and a replacement cycle. c. The guidelines for the mural project will be reviewed for consistency in evaluation of submittals. d. Carly Watson will check for any applicable City requirements / guidance to include in the call for entry language. 2. Storm Drain Intake Artwork a. Brian Phillips has provided the Call for Entry to the City Council for review and approval. b. Discussion took place to hold submittals over winter months with installation / painting to take place in the spring. c. Carly Watson will look into repainting (removing) the murals for when it’s decided the storm drains need to be returned to the original state. 3. Revamp / Revise Art in the Parks (AitP) a. Recommendations for art placement in the Tahira & Labh Hira Park (located on the site of the former Edwards School) are being gathered; a meeting was held recently. The Committee will reach out to City leaders for guidance. 4. The “Infinity” sculpture is installed in a greenspace at the intersection of Park Way and Brookridge. a. A new resident in neighborhood (recently moved in and after the sculpture was requested and installed) does not like this piece and would like it removed. Through discussion it became evident there is not precedent for this situation and further discussion indicates a policy addressing this situation may be needed. Taking it a step further Angie DeWaard and Candace Zwank will draft a document addressing this and a rotation of art and/or decommission timeline. Olivia Madison suggests the group research and revisit this topic at a future meeting. 5. “Lost In Space” a. The issue of signage being attached to the sculpture has been addressed. b. Aspen Pflanz and Paolo Sepulveda will work on a video on appreciation of Public Art. I. Old Business 1. Celebration Planning: 25th Year of AAOSE and 30th Year of PAC a. Committee Meeting updates 1. Olivia Madison provided a committee report to PAC members. 2. The culminating event will take place on September 22, 2021, 4 – 6, in the City Gymnasium with a program beginning at 5:00pm. 3. PAC members are providing tours of public art installations in City Hall, on September 22; contact Claire Kruesel for inclusion to the tour guide team, she will develop a schedule. 4. Photography Contest; judges are determined to be Keith Abraham, Dan McClanahan, and Terry Smay. 5. Verification taking place that September is designated as art appreciation month for Ames. 6. Chalk the Walk will take place during The Octagon Art Festival, September 26, 2021. J. Commission Committees, Liaison Reports, and Comments 1. Outreach (Olivia Madison and Erica Briest as Co-Chairs; Candace Zwank, Penny Adam) a. Neighborhood Art; deadline for application is December 17, 2021 b. Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (AAOSE); entry for submittals opens October 1, 2021 and closes on January 28, 2022. Olivia Madison will plan to designate the judges for the submittals; Erica Briest will lead the review of submittals for Neighborhood art award and placement. 2. Public Relations (Paola Sepulveda and Sara Sherman as Co-Chairs; Taylor Carlson) a. Festival & Event participation for FY2021 1. Octagon Art Festival on September 26, 2021 2. Downtown Farmer’s Market; Olivia Madison moved that PAC attends Farmer’s Market if/when there is an event to promote. This motion passed unanimously b. Paola Sepulveda requests information from PAC members on upcoming events so she can add them to the Commission’s Facebook page to generate awareness with the public. 3. Collection Management (Angie DeWaard and Amanda Gigler as Co-Chairs; Claire Kruesel, Karen George, Olivia Madison) a. The artist looked at “The Bronsons” where vandalism recently occurred. Repairs are suggested and underway. b. “Balance” – The artist of “Balance” has made observations of the crack in the base. This sculpture is removed and back in his shop for repairs. c. City Hall Art Placement Signage; removal and installation is underway with intention of completion prior to the Celebration on September 22, 2021. d. PAC Collection Management Database System, no action needed at this time e. Dahlquist light features downtown, no action needed at this time f. Glowforge laser Cutter, no action needed at this time K. For the Good of the Order The next PAC meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, September 1 at 12:00 noon in 135 Ames City Hall. L. Adjournment (Chair) Angie DeWaard adjourned the meeting at 1:23 pm.
