MEETING MINUTES – July 7, 2021
AMES CITY HALL, ROOM 135
Present: Angie DeWaard (Chair), Penny Adam (Secretary), Erica Briest (Vice-Chair), Taylor Carlson, Amanda
Gigler, Karen George (Treasurer), Olivia Madison, Aspen Pflanz, Paola Sepulveda, Candace Zwank,
Absent: Claire Kruesel, Brian Phillips (City Liaison), Elias Simpson, Sara Sherman, Joseph Merchant
Public Forum / Guests: no guests were present
A. Call to Order – Angie DeWaard, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:01pm.
B. Approval of July 7, 2021 Agenda (Angie DeWaard, Chair)
Paola Sepulveda moved and Karen George seconded to approve the agenda. The agenda was approved
without changes or corrections.
C. Approval of June 2, 2021 Minutes (Penny Adam, Secretary)
Candace Zwank moved and Taylor Carlson seconded to approve the minutes. Minutes were approved with
one correction.
D. Treasurer’s Report for July 7, 2021 (Karen George, Treasurer)
Karen provided updates on the Treasury and that the carry-over budget is approved.
E. Public Forum – N/A
F. Chair’s Report and Comments (Angie DeWaard)
1. Angie introduced a new PAC member, Aspen Pflanz, and provided a brief overview of the Commission.
2. Angie will look into having PAC representation at a Farmer’s Market, close to the start of the fall semester
at ISU.
G. City of Ames Liaison Comments (Brian Phillips, City Liaison)
1. No discussion
H. New Business
1. Transformer Cabinet Mural Project proposal
a. Identification of transformer boxes for this project is completed.
b. PAC gave approval, at the June 2021 meeting, to move forward with the selected vendor, Chase
Graphics, in developing the sizes needed for the selected transformer cabinets.
c. Next steps include determining our timeline and process so templates for each box’s art work can be
completed and a call for entries for art can be issued. The group discussed coordinating installation
with the next group of AAOSE sculpture to maximize publicity and public attention. A sub-committee
may be assembled for art installation submittals and installation management.
2. Storm Drain Intake Artwork
a. Sara Sherman has the call for artists drafted; Sara and Liz Calhoun have identified drains, located in
the Downtown and Campustown areas.
b. Liz Calhoun has a website with parameters up at CityofAmes.org > Public Works > Storm Drain Mural
Art
c. A call for artists is ready for review and approval by the City Council, this timing is to be determined
3. Revamp / Revise Art in the Parks (Claire Kruesel (chair), Angie DeWaard, Elias Simpson, Erica Briest, Paola
Sepulveda)
a. A virtual meeting took place where this sub-committee discussed parameters for a work of art for the
new plaza being planned in Downtown Ames
b. Several locations for art placement in parks have been discussed as well as a theme to bring cohesion
/ connection of the various parks across the City. A line item in the PAC budget is identified and is
part of the roll-over portion of the budget in support of this program.
c. Discussion on the new Ames City park – Tahira and Labh Hira – and including their vision / concepts in
art work for this park. They donated to the inception of the park with emphasis on wellbeing of
children.
I. Old Business
1. Celebration Planning: 25th Year of AAOSE and 30th Year of PAC
a. Committee report; Olivia Madison reports good progress continues. Olivia and Brian Phillips are
working with the budget.
b. Chalk the Walk is part of The Octagon Art Festival, September 26, 2021
c. Culminating Event; September 22, 2021 from 4 – 6 at City Gymnasium with Olivia being the MC for
the evening.
d. The photography competition, planned as part of the event, has been posted on the PAC website
including call for entry information. Olivia Madison and Angie DeWaard are identifying three judges
to judge the photography competition and determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for each youth and adult
divisions.
e. Erica Briest has Tactile Art Workshops scheduled in September; Sept 4 at Bandshell Park, Sept 18 at
Miracle Park, each scheduled for 10:00am to 2:00pm. Erica will provide an art supply list.
J. Commission Committees, Liaison Reports, and Comments
1. Outreach (Olivia Madison and Erica Briest Co-Chairs; Amanda Gigler, Candace Zwank, Penny Adam)
a. Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (AAOSE)
b. Neighborhood Art; December 17, 2021 is the deadline for the 2021 applications
c. Art in the Park
2. Public Relations (Paola Sepulveda as Chair; Sara Sherman, Taylor Carlson)
a. Festival & Event participation for FY2021
1. Reiman Gardens, July 11, 2021; PAC is registered
2. The Octagon Art Festival, September 26, 2021
a. Chalk the Walk takes place during The Octagon’s Art Festival
3. Collection Management (Angie DeWaard and Amanda Gigler as Co-Chairs; Claire Kruesel, Karen George,
Olivia Madison)
a. “The Bronsons”, located at Arizona Circle, has been vandalized. Pieces are being retrieved and
damages assess before the artist will be contacted. Ames PD is involved.
b. Update on removal and installation of City Hall Art Placement and Signage
c. PAC Collection Management Database (Angie and Paola)
d. “Balance” the crack needs to be repaired and is under warranty; City owns next steps
e. Dahlquist light features downtown; no action needed at this time
f. Glowforge Laser Cutter; no action needed at this time
K. For the Good of the Order
The next PAC meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, August 4 at 12:00 noon in 135 Ames City Hall.
