MEETING MINUTES – June 2, 2021
AMES CITY HALL, ROOM 135
Present: Angie DeWaard (Chair), Amanda Gigler, Brian Phillips (City Liaison), Candace Zwank, Claire Kruesel,
Elias Simpson, Erica Briest (Vice-Chair), Joseph Merchant, Karen George (Treasurer), Olivia Madison,
Paola Sepulveda, Penny Adam (Secretary), Taylor Carlson
Absent: Sara Sherman
Public Forum / Guests: no guests in attendance today
A. Call to Order – Angie DeWaard, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:04pm.
B. Approval of June 2, 2021 Agenda (Angie DeWaard, Chair)
Erica Briest moved and Karen George seconded to approve the agenda. The agenda was approved without
corrections.
C. Approval of May 5, 2021 Minutes (Penny Adam, Secretary)
Olivia Madison moved and Taylor Carlson seconded to approve the minutes. Minutes were approved with
without corrections.
D. Treasurer’s Report for June 2, 2021 (Karen George, Treasurer)
Karen George reviewed the treasury status.
E. Public Forum – N/A
F. Chair’s Report and Comments (Angie DeWaard)
1. Andrew Ward is leaving PAC, Brian Phillips is actively working on a replacement.
2. Discussion took place regarding this week’s Art Walk. Members are needed for set-up and staffing the
PAC booth; Taylor Carlson, Erica Briest and Olivia Madison can assist with gathering components and
setting up. They will also pick-up the printed brochures.
G. City of Ames Liaison Comments (Brian Phillips, City Liaison)
1. Brian is working with the Mayor on Andrew Ward’s replacement.
2. New parking passes for this calendar year were distributed to PAC members.
3. Brian is meeting with Planning and Housing Director about the new Plaza being planned for surface Lot N.
Claire Kruesel will Brian will meet and discuss.
4. Brian will order additional PAC shirts to replenish supply.
H. New Business
1. Partnership with COTA, Small Arts Grants
a. $10,000 available funding
b. Four proposed grants selected, sent to Council on May 25, and approved. Brian Phillips indicates
PAC’s involvement is completed and will work on getting contracts in place. Following are the four
grants being awarded.
i. KHOI poetry reading / mixed media art project
ii. workshop to collaboratively mend abandoned quilts
iii. a mural in Campustown
iv. a commission of six artists to develop art encouraging Ames engagement with the climate action
planning process
2. Transformer Cabinet Mural Project Proposal
a. Seven transformer boxes, for this project, are identified.
b. PAC unanimously approved moving forward with Chase Graphics, the selected vendor, on this project.
3. Storm Drain Intake Artwork
a. Sara Sherman is working with Liz Calhoun, the call for artists is drafted
b. Potential storm drain locations are identified; these options include schools, Campustown, others
4. Revitalize Art in the Parks program
a. Committee identified: Claire Kruesel (chair), Angie DeWaard, Elias Simpson, Erica Briest, Paola
Sepulveda. This group will stay after today’s PAC meeting to discuss next steps.
b. Keith Abraham has been contacted
I. Old Business
1. Celebration Planning: 25th Year of AAOSE and 30th Year of PAC
a. Olivia Madison (celebration planning chair) updated PAC with a committee report
b. Social Media Selfie Scavenger Hunt; a response to Neighborhood, Parks, and Public Art
c. Tactile Art Workshops are planned to include the visually and sensory impaired. The first workshop
will be provided at a Farmer’s Market, additional workshops will take place at The Bandshell and at
Miracle Park.
d. A photo contest will be part of the celebration, prizes may be awarded. More to come as details are
worked out.
e. Chalk the Walk at The Octagon; September 26 during The Octagon Art Festival
f. Culminating event; September 22, 2021, 4 – 6 pm, at City Gymnasium. Olivia Madison will involve
Carly Watson with sending invitations.
J. Commission Committees, Liaison Reports, and Comments
1. Outreach (Olivia Madison and Erica Briest Co-Chairs; Amanda Gigler, Andrew Ward, Candace Zwank,
Penny Adam)
a. Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (AAOSE)
1. Paola Sepulveda and Taylor Carlson completed the brochure; printing will be completed today.
2. Installation, of sculptures, is completed.
b. Neighborhood Sculpture
1. Art works are approved by City Council, purchase agreements are signed, Carly Watson has sent
payments to the artists.
2. The purchased sculptures, and identification plaques, have been installed.
3. Deadline for 2021 applications is December 17, 2021
4. Repairs have been made to “Play Things”; the artist is coming to Ames in the near future to apply
sealant to “Woman with Flowers”.
2. Public Relations (Paola Sepulveda as Chair; Sara Sherman, Taylor Carlson)
a. Festival and Event Participation for FY2021
1. Artwalk is on June 3, 2021; discussion took place on staffing the PAC booth. Updated ballots will
be ordered for voting on the new AAOSE sculpture display.
2. Reiman Gardens on July 10, 2021; PAC is registered with Reiman, more PAC volunteers are
needed
3. The Octagon Art Festival on September 26, 2021; Chalk the Walk will take place during the
Festival.
4. A new idea was presented of adding 3D photos and/or audio to the story map of the new AAOSE
installation.
3. Collection Management (Angie DeWaard and Amanda Gigler as Co-Chairs; Claire Kruesel, Karen George,
Olivia Madison)
a. City Hall Art, placement and signage. Olivia Madison has been working on consistent labeling of the
Collection; she is making great progress.
b. PAC Collection Management Database, no discussion
c. “Balance” – the crack in the ball is getting worse and needs repair, the sculpture is under warranty.
Olivia Madison has provided an informational report to Brian Phillips enabling pursuit of repairs with
the artist.
d. Dahlquist light features (downtown), no action needed at this time
e. Glowforge Laser Cutter, no action needed at this time
K. For the Good of the Order
The next PAC meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 12:00 noon in 135 Ames City Hall.
