HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - PAC Meeting Minutes 04/07/21 1 PUBLIC ART COMMISSION, CITY OF AMES MEETING MINUTES – APRIL 7, 2021 AMES CITY HALL, held via Zoom virtual meeting Present: Sara Sherman (Chair), Erica Briest, Angie DeWaard, Amanda Gigler, Karen George (Treasurer), Claire Kruesel, Olivia Madison, Joseph Merchant, Brian Phillips (Interim City Liaison), Paola Sepulveda, Elias Simpson, and Candace Zwank Absent: Penny Adam (Secretary), Taylor Carlson, Andrew Ward Public Forum/ Guests: N/A A. Call to Order - Sara Sherman, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:03 PM B. Approval of April 7, 2021 Agenda (Sara Sherman, Chair) Olivia Madison moved and Erica Briest seconded to approve the agenda without corrections. C. Approval of March 3, 2021 Minutes (Penny Adam, secretary) Angie DeWaard moved and Amanda Gigler seconded to approve the minutes without corrections. D. Treasurer’s Report (Karen George) There are no new expenses to report. E. Public Forum / Guests – N/A F. Chair’s Report and Comments (Sara Sherman) 1. New members Joe Merchant and Elias Simpson were welcomed and introduced themselves. The members of PAC introduced themselves and described their interest in serving on PAC. 2. Next month Chairs and Members of the Standing Committees - Outreach, Public Relations and Collection Management - will be appointed. G. City of Ames Liaison Comments/Updates (Brian Phillips, City Liaison) 1. The City’s Electric Department is interested in hosting a large concrete pad in Bandshell Park for a larger AAOSE sculpture or other larger sculpture. 2. The downtown paver project is underway. The Vanishing Railyard installation is partially gone. Justin Clawson from public works at the City oversees the paver project. 3. Ames Main Street is asking about the light pillars and bases in Downtown. Quotes for fixing the pillars will be sought, as the quote given by the artist to restore the pillars is considered to 2 be too high. PAC is asked to decide in the future whether to repair the pillars and bases or to decommission the pieces. Brian will provide information on the quotes. H. New Business 1. Nominate and Elect Officers: Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice-Chair Officers for the coming year were nominated and elected. Those elected unopposed were: Penny Adam – Secretary, and Karen George – Treasurer. Two members expressed interest in the office of Vice-Chair. Erica Briest was nominated by Olivia Madsen and Amanda Gigler was nominated by Sara Sherman. After remarks by both candidates, a voice roll call vote was taken. Erica Briest was elected Vice-Chair. 2. Partnership with COTA – Small Arts Grant Angie DeWaard and Sara Sherman met with Tom Lockhart of COTA regarding the Small Arts Grants. $10,000 is available for the grants. The criteria for the grants have been sent out, and applications are due by the end of April. Brian said that two applications and two inquiries have been received. There is a link for applications on both the PAC and COTA websites; PAC members are encouraged to share this information. 3. Glowforge Laser Cutter Candace Zwank presented information on the Glowforge Laser Cutter and other options to create QR codes for outdoor art managed by PAC. Many issues were discussed including the ability to create Braille labels, and if the QR codes will be linked to a database that can be used to manage inventory, provide information on the art to the public and report problems with the artworks. Sara Sherman moved and Olivia Madison seconded that PAC table this discussion until further information is obtained. 4.Transformer Cabinet Mural Project Several options for the Transformer Cabinet Mural Project were presented. The funds for this project are available now. Transformers downtown will be covered with murals first. Bids were received from several vendors to provide wraps for the transformers. Sara Sherman will follow up with the vendors to compare the quality of wrap material vs the prices quoted. 5. Storm Drain Intake Artwork Artwork on Storm Drain Intakes was discussed. This project was brought to PAC from the City Council by Brian Phillips. There is a budget of $10,000 for this project provided by the City. The artwork must have an educational aspect. Placement of the art was discussed, also how the paintings will be done. Liz Calhoun of Stormwater Management at the City is very interested in this project. Sara Sherman will email Liz to determine how to proceed. 6. Possible Purchase of a camera to take photos of sculptures 3 A purchase of a camera for use by PAC was brought up by Angie DeWaard. Angie and Paola Sepulveda have used their own cameras to photograph artwork for AAOSE and other projects. Brian Phillips suggested that a camera in the PR department will be available for use by PAC. 7. Revamp/Revise Art in the Parks Claire Kruesel discussed revitalizing the Art in the Parks program. Budgets for Art in the Parks are carried over from year to year, and can fund large projects, such as larger sculptures and pads, and long-term art projects. A committee to explore these ideas will be formed in the future. I. Old Business 1. Celebration Planning 25th Year of AAOSE and 30th Year of PAC Olivia Madison has provided PAC via email with notes from meetings of the Celebration Planning for the 25th year of AAOSE and 30th year of PAC. Dates for events and possible speakers were discussed. Elias Simpson will join the Celebration Committee which meets on the last Wednesday of each month. The Culminating Event will possibly be held in the City Gym, and PAC members may be asked to provide tours of artwork in City Hall. Please email Olivia with any ideas or thoughts on the Celebration. 2. Commission Committees, Liaison Reports, and Comments a. Outreach (Olivia Madison and Erica Briest Co-Charis; Andrew Ward, Penny Adam, Candace Zwank, and Amanda Gigler) 1.AAOSE AAOSE selections have been approved by the City Council. Carly is working with Parks and Recreation regarding installing the sculptures. The sculptures will likely be installed in May or June. When installation is done, photos will be taken and a new brochure produced. 2. Neighborhood Art City Council has approved the pieces and locations selected for the Neighborhood Art program. Carly will coordinate installation. Amanda will inform the applicants of the decisions. b. Public Relations (Paola Sepulveda Chair; Taylor Carlson, Sara Sherman) Sara will send out signups to PAC members for Festival and Events: Artwalk in June, Reiman Gardens event in July and Octagon Art Festival in September. All events are subject to the COVID situation. Members concerned about COVID need not sign up. c. Collection Management (Chair Angie DeWaard; Olivia Madison, Claire Kruesel, and Karen George) Collection Management members will be working on the database inventory of artworks. 3. Update of Bylaws 4 Candace Zwank provided PAC via email a draft of revised bylaws. Candace moved, and Olivia Madison seconded to adopt the updated and amended bylaws. This motion was approved by unanimous vote. K. For the Good of the Order The next PAC meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 12:00 noon in 135 Ames City Hall with logistics to be determined. L.
