HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - PAC Meeting Minutes 01/06/21PUBLIC ART COMMISSION, CITY OF AMES MEETING MINUTES – January 6, 2021 AMES CITY HALL, HELD VIA ZOOM VIRTUAL MEETING Present: Sara Sherman (Chair), Amanda Gigler, Andrew Ward, Angie DeWaard (Vice Chair), Brian Phillips (City Liaison), Candace Zwank, Claire Kruesel, Erica Briest, James (Jim) Surber, Olivia Madison, Penny Adam (Secretary), Absent: Karen George (Treasurer), Paola Sepulveda, Taylor Carlson Public Forum / Guests: none present A. Call to Order – Sara Sherman, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:07pm. B. Approval of January 6, 2021 Agenda (Sara Sherman, Chair) Erica Briest moved and Jim Surber seconded to approve the agenda. C. Approval of December 2, 2020 Minutes (Penny Adam, Secretary) Amanda Gigler moved and Jim Surber seconded to approve the minutes. D. Treasurer’s Report for January 6, 2021 (Karen George, Treasurer) E. Public Forum – no discussion today F. Chair’s Report and Comments (Sara Sherman) – no discussion today G. City of Ames Liaison Comments (Brian Phillips, City Liaison) 1. The Council meeting to wrap up budget is scheduled on February 9; 5:00pm meeting start. A representative from PAC needs to attend, likely Sara Sherman and Karen George. 2. The next regular meeting of the City Council is scheduled on January 12; 6:00pm meeting start. Discussion on the $10K arts grants is on the agenda, additional parameters for use may be presented and discussed. Olivia Madison plans to attend. 3. Carly Watson has backfilled Jacque Higgins’ position. H. New Business 1. Artist Workspace Partnership with COTA and The Octagon a. Discussion at the December 2, 2020 meeting was to support The Octagon’s proposal. After additional discussion Amanda Gigler makes the motion in support of The Octagon’s proposal to remodel to accommodate individual artists; the motion passed. 2. Budget proposal 2021-2022 a. The group reviewed the current treasury report. b. The budget draft proposal was reviewed with a question about sharing the expense of the transformer project with the City, as it derived from there. After discussion it is determined to develop the transformer project more fully, including a budget proposal, for presentation to Council at a later meeting for review, approval, and budget request. c. Angie DeWaard makes the motion, with Erica Briest seconding, to take the budget draft proposal to the City Council and include a bullet point to also carry-over unspent funds to the next fiscal year; motion passed. I. Old Business 1. PAC projects, initiatives, events looking forward to FY20, FY21, FY 22 a. Celebration Planning: 25th Year of AAOSE and 30th Year of PAC – Olivia Madison (Committee Chair), Angie DeWaard, Claire Kruesel, Erica Briest, Sara Sherman (Additional Contributors Bob Kindred, Heather Johnson, Kerry Dixon) b. Committee Report, no report today. J. Commission Committees, Liaison Reports, and Comments 1. Outreach (Olivia Madison and Erica Briest Co-Chairs; Amanda Gigler, Andrew Ward, Candace Zwank, Penny Adam) a. Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (AAOSE) i. Panelists selected, Kerry Dixon (chair), Kevin Stowe, Lisa Teske, Mary James, will meet in early February to review the applications. b. Neighborhood Sculpture i. Applications for Neighborhood Sculpture from the 2020 AAOSE Collection have been received. Erica Briest will schedule a meeting for the Outreach Committee, including Sara Sherman, to meet and review the applications with intent to narrow the field to finalists for purchase and placement. ii. Finalist selections must be approved by City departments including risk management, traffic iii. Transformer cabinet mural project proposal (James Surber, Andrew Ward) – no discussion 2. Public Relations (Paola Sepulveda as Chair; Sara Sherman, Taylor Carlson) a. Festival & Event Participation for FY2021 – dependent on current COVID situation, participation of PAC members needed at the booth i. Artwalk, June 2021 ii. Reiman Gardens, July 2021 iii. The Octagon Art Festival, September 2021 3. Collection Management (Angie DeWaard and James Surber as Co-Chairs; Claire Kruesel, Karen George, Olivia Madison) a. Olivia Madison provides an update on the sculpture “Balance” and the crack at the base. She is working with the City to obtain images and information on the original installation. b. Candace Zwank will send to Sara Sherman and Karen George the proposal for the Glowforge laser cutter. This cutter can create QR labels to withstand exterior elements for labeling outside art installations. K. For the Good of the Order The next PAC meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, February 3 at 12:00 noon with logistics to be determined. L. Adjournment (Chair) Sara Sherman adjourned the meeting at 12:52 pm.
