HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Master - PAC Meeting Minutes 11/01/22 PUBLIC ART COMMISSION, CITY OF AMES MEETING MINUTES – October 4, 2022 AMES CITY HALL, ROOM 135 In Attendance: Erica Briest (Chair), Kyle Hauswirth (Secretary), Saahar Kassi, Angie DeWaard, Candace Zwank, Joseph Merchant • Call to Order- 5:30 • Consent Agenda- o Remove Art in the Park from the Consent Agenda o Motion to Approve- Hauswirth ▪ Second- DeWaard • Guests- o None • Chair’s Report- o Point out that Erica is totally stoked that November is military family month. o Erica holds military families near and dear to her heart, as she is part of a military family, and November has Veterans Day as well. o Take some time to try to find some Military Art and thank a veteran. • No City Liaison Report • Status Updates o Art in the Parks- ▪ Before Claire had to step off she was doing work with the new park going in Ames and it was kind of left hanging. ▪ Art in the Park is usually every 3 years, but wasn’t done last year due to the anniversary celebration. ▪ Children’s Memorial Park is another option that could be utilized. ▪ Question was raised if it wouldn’t make sure sense to start from scratch for Art in the Parks instead of working from a previously orphaned project. ▪ Art in the Parks Subcommittee was proposed as a way to keep up on the project. • Joe, Angie, Kyle, and Candace volunteered as members of the Art in the Parks subcommittee. o What to do with Public Art ▪ Draft has been done and posted online. ▪ It will be put up on Social Media when it is done. o Solar Lighting- ▪ Sahar recommended to start with the 10 largest sculptures. ▪ Angie recommended a subcommittee, and moved to create a subcommittee to deal with the solar lighting. • Candace seconded. • New and Continuing Business- o Ice Arena Mural Request ▪ Recommended to be moved to the “No Action Necessary” part o Decommissioned Fire Hydrants ▪ No updates are known o Damaged Art- Monolith ▪ Nothing Visual Today ▪ ISU Research Park has offered $5000 and a staff member to participate in the selection process. o CyRide Stop Art ▪ Merchant contacted CyRide representatives and hasn’t heard back after sending a more detailed proposal to them. ▪ Puget Sound Link-Light Rail system has a whole system of public art and a pictogram system that has different symbols for different stops. o PAC Booth items for festival appearances ▪ Next festival is Art Walk, in June. ▪ Merchant recommended a system they purchased for Town and Gown for displaying the AAOSE art. • Discussion of next project- o Adopt-an-Intersection ▪ Idea to function as a similar system as the Storm Drain or Transformer wrap, where we look for submissions, and do the work in the spring. o Potential Calendar of Ames’s Public Art ▪ Received well, discussed as something for 2024. • Motion to Adjourn- Hauswirth o Second- Merchant • Adjournment at 6:53
