MEETING MINUTES – March 2, 2022
AMES CITY HALL, City Hall Council Chambers
Present: Angie DeWaard (Chair), Erica Briest (Vice-Chair), Penny Adam (Secretary), Kyle Hauswirth, Claire
Kruesel, Olivia Madison, Joseph Merchant, Brian Phillips (City Liaison), Candace Zwank
Absent: Taylor Carlson, Karen George (Treasurer), Aspen Pflanz, Paola Sepulveda, Sara Sherman, Elias Simpson
Public Forum / Guests: Tom Jackson with Ames Town & Gown
I. Call to Order – Angie DeWaard, Chair, called the meeting to order at 12:08pm.
II. Consent Agenda - Joe Merchant moved and Kyle Hauswirth seconded to approve with minor adjustment to
discuss AAOSE and Neighborhood Art (C.1.a & b).
A. Minutes for January 5, 2022 PAC Meeting (Penny Adam, Secretary)
B. Treasurer’s Reports for January 27, 2022 and February 23, 2022 (Karen George, Treasurer)
C. Committee Reports and Comments
1. Outreach (Olivia Madison and Erica Briest Co-Chairs; Penny Adam, Candace Zwank)
a. Neighborhood Art. Subcommittee met January 12, 2022 (Erica, Aspen, Penny, Claire)
b. AAOSE. Entries opened Oct 1, 2021 and closed Jan 28, 2022. Olivia Madison is looking for judges,
potentially with ties to Main Street and/or the schools.
2. Public Relations (Paola Sepulveda and Sara Sherman as Co-Chairs; Taylor Carlson)
a. Digital frames for festival and events (Elias Simpson). No action needed, included for future
discussion.
3. Collection Management (Angie DeWaard and Amanda Gigler as Co-Chairs; Olivia Madison, Claire
Kruesel, Karen George)
a. PAC Collection GIS database (Paola Sepulveda and Angie DeWaard)
b. The AAOSE piece titled “This Is Living” has a quarter stuck in its ear which Carly Watson is
researching.
c. Glowforge laser cutter (Candace Zwank) No immediate action needed, for future discussion.
III. Public Forum
A. Tom Jackson with Ames Town & Gown joined today’s meeting.
a. Tom Jackson spoke on behalf of Priscilla Sage works. He received notice of damage to these works,
that PAC may be moving towards deaccessioning them, and wanted to discuss with PAC. The group
concluded next steps include bringing Priscilla in to assess whether repairs are a viable option; Brian
Phillips looking into what group may have moved the works and if there is any recourse, and possibly
strengthening lease language regarding public art. Additional take aways for PAC were recorded.
IV. Chair’s Report and Comments - Angie DeWaard
A. Welcome to Kyle Hauswirth, new PAC member.
B. Quick review of last meeting
a. Calls for artists for each the storm drain intakes and transformer cabinet wrap projects have been
returned. Sara Sherman has identified teams to review the proposals.
C. The change in meeting for PAC -- to the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30pm -- goes into effect with the
April 2022 meeting.
V. City of Ames Liaison Comments - Brian Phillips
A. Green Hills (GH) has submitted a request to have transformer cabinets, near their campus, painted and/or
wrapped; they may be willing to help cover costs. GH would like PAC to assist if this moves forward.
Current response to call for artists may have extra packages that can cover GH request, alternately PAC
may want to see how the first project implements prior to moving forward with additional locations.
VI. Status Updates, No Action Needed Today
A. Potential wording change to Deaccession Policy
1. Angie DeWaard has done a draft version, Candace Zwank is reviewing and making notes
B. Revamp and revise Art in the Parks program (Claire Kruesel)
1. Subcommittee has discussed doing one large project in each park as a focus piece.
C. “What Not To Do With Public Art” features on social media.
1. Current discussion is to hold this idea until after the next generation of AAOSE sculptures are
installed.
D. Ice Arena Mural request (Angie DeWaard)
1. Taylor Bassett, ice arena manager, has requested a mural potentially be placed in the landing of the
stairs; presently there is not a budget.
a) PAC discussed partnering with the ice arena / Parks & Rec on fundraising to pay for the mural;
DeWaard has contacted Bassett to explore. Awaiting reply from Bassett as she explores
internally.
E. Flo-esque Sculpture at Gilman Courtyard
1. Claire Kruesel has located a sculpture, that looks a lot like Flo, in a cordoned-off courtyard at Gilman
Hall (ISU Campus). Is it possible to place the two sculptures together?
2. As University Museums states this sculpture is not part of their collection, Kruesel will further
research ownership as well as state of repair of the works.
VII. New and Continuing Business, Action Needed
A. Olivia Madison presently does not have a team to review and jury the new AAOSE selections however has
options to pursue and can then proceed with judging. PAC cannot approve the AAOSE selections via
email, a special meeting will be conducted to vote on selected sculptures to remain on time with when
sculptures need to be installed. A special meeting is planned for Tuesday, March 15 at 5:30pm via zoom.
B. Erica Briest reports the Neighborhood Art selections are approved by the City with one substitution which
the applicant approves of. She has negotiated purchase prices with the artists, $14,000 (about $1,500 less
than budgeted). Claire Kruesel moves, Kyle Hauswirth approves Neighborhood Art selections; approved
unanimously.
C. Review of PAC documentation
1. Olivia Madison, Candace Zwank, and Claire Kruesel will complete changes proposed to the
documentation with additional documents to add listed below. A vote to accept the revised
documents will take place at the April meeting.
a. Requests to artists to also submit care requirements and life expectancy of their works.
b. Communication on how to care for works for public / maintenance staff / PAC members to
complete as prescribed by the artist.
c. A handbook, desk guide for PAC.
D. Officer elections will be held at the April meeting.
1. Erica Briest will take over as chair, Angie DeWaard moves to past-chair; vice-chair, secretary, and
treasurer are needed. Changes to PAC membership will also affect membership on the Committees.
2. Interested individuals can reach out to Angie DeWaard or Erica Briest or speak at the March meeting.
E. Priscilla Sage pieces in City Auditorium
1. Brief recap: upon request to have additional lighting added, it is observed the works to be in disrepair
such that deaccession requests are being drafted by Olivia Madison.
a. Tom Jackson came to today’s meeting to discuss these works. Next steps were discussed, see
section Public Forum, item A.
F. Decommissioned Fire Hydrants
1. Joseph Merchant has suggested decorating and placing decommissioned fire hydrants as working with
live hydrants is too much a safety concern.
2. Angie DeWaard has discussed with Dale Weber (Public Works) and Keith Abraham (Parks & Rec)
about placing these at the dog park (inside and outside the fencing) as well as at the animal shelter.
a. PAC would like to take this on and also suggests placing additional decommissioned hydrants at
doggie bag stations in local parks.
b. About seven hydrants are currently available, usually about 10 additional hydrants are
decommissioned annually.
G. Discussion of next project
1. Angie DeWaard has provided a poll to PAC members to gather interest in next projects. Aspen Pflanz
will bring details to a future meeting for discussion.
